First lady Laura Bush came before hundreds of flag-waving partisans in one of California's hottest congressional races Thursday and made an appeal for civility in the battle over control of Congress and debate over the war in Iraq.
"We must have serious national discussions conducted with civility and respect," Bush said as she appeared at William Jessup University in Rocklin to boost the candidacy of Rep. John Doolittle. "The right to have these conversations is part of what makes our country great and our democracy strong."
Unlike her husband, President Bush, who has campaigned for GOP House and Senate candidates by aggressively attacking Democrats as a party of defeatism in Iraq and the war on terror, the first lady was understated as she called for support of troops in battle.
But she also warned against political dialogue that could hurt the war effort, issuing subtle criticism of congressional candidates who are challenging Republicans in Congress in a seeming national referendum on the president's handling of the Iraq war.
"Responsible candidates understand that the men and women of our military are risking their lives for us overseas and that we must conduct our debate here at home in a debate that is not jeopardizing our troops in harm's way," she said.
The first lady's late campaign appearance on behalf of the Roseville Republican underscored the sense of urgency in a district that has long been safe for Republicans. Her appearance comes less than a month after the president appeared for a Doolittle fundraiser.
Just two years ago, Doolittle won with 65 percent of vote. But he is facing a spirited challenge from retired Air Force Lt. Col. Charlie Brown, who has made Doolittle's ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff the centerpiece...

Given that there really is not a need to 'survive' politically, I think it shows tremendous clout and class for the Bush's to appear for other GOP candidates. I appreciate it.
If I could find a single Laura Bush type here in Massachusetts...we'd both escape this lunatic state together!

I suppose the Dems go before non-partisan (and certainly not flag-waiving) crowds.
This oviously comes as a surprise to this guy as he's used to the screeching of Hillary and thinks it's natural.
