Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, shooting for the film A Mighty Heart based on the life of slain Journalist Daniel Pearl at Pune have been provided with Y category security due to threat to their lives from the al-Qaeda, Intelligence Bureau sources said in New Delhi on Thursday.
After assessing the inputs on threat perception from various intelligence agencies, India has provided the desired security to the international stars, sources told UNI.
The Maharashtra Police was also informed about the threat perception as the film is based on Pearl, who was assassinated by the al-Qaeda militants in Pakistan after being abducted on January 23, 2002 while working on a story on Islamic militancy.
The stars were on a private visit, otherwise the security could have been further tightened, said the source.
Jolie plays the role of Mariane, the widow of Pearl, the South Asia Correspondent with the Wall Street Journal. American actor Dan Futtermann is in the role of Pearl. Pitt makes a guest appearance in the movie directed by Micheal Winterbottom.
British security experts were flown to Pune earlier this week, after being alerted by Pakistan because of the bad publicity the film would give to al-Qaeda in the world.
The movie is based on an adaptation of Mariane Pearl's book, A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl, and is being co-produced by Plan B, a production company founded by Brad Pitt and his ex-wife, actress Jennifer Aniston.
A bungalow in Aundh, a Pune suburb, was chosen for the shoot because the area resembles Karachi, Pakistan, where Pearl and his wife Mariane spent some time. The Pakistani government did not give permission to the film unit to shoot the film in Karachi.
I don't know that either of them really use their head that much. The terrorists should threaten to cut off some other body parts, if they really want to scare them.
What'd they do, threaten to deflate her lips?
Considering Presidents and Prime Ministers get AAA security, and Governors and Senators get B category, this seems appropriate.
This movie will be a puff piece.
I agree. I believe I heard Jolie refer to it as being "a testament of the human spirit and how people come together" or something like that. Unfortunately whenever I hear that first phrase I grown inside because I know it's going to be liberal, humanist, crap.

In India, security is provided to high-risk individuals by the police and local government. Depending on the threat perception to the person, the category is divided into four tiers: Z+ (highest level), Z, Y and X
Individuals under the security blanket include Cabinet Ministers, Chief Ministers, High Court and Supreme Judges, leading politicians, and senior bureaucrats. Details of the categories are as follows:
Z+ category has a security cover of 51 personnel.
Z category has has a security cover of 28 personnel.
Y category has a security cover of 11 personnel.
X category has a security cover of 2 personnel.
In many cases being placed in a category is viewed as a status symbol by politicians, and many use their clout to secure a Z+ security cover. This is criticised by the public as a waste of taxpayer's money on less deserving candidates.
'Y' security, lol
god forbid theses twits would suffer some harm.. Imagine the uproar.
Err,not so fast!!We are talking about India here, where the rating scale is peaks at Z & Z+.Only top political leaders, esp the Union Cabinet & other persons like Head of Opposition & ruling parties get it.In that way Brangelina are not in bad company!!
Oh. Sorry, I was thinking in reverse....
If Al Qaeda kidnapped and beheaded Jolie and Pitt...would anyone care?
I like to see the movie but if they are involved, I won't.
"...because of the bad publicity the film would give to al-Qaeda in the world."
Yeah, I'm sure that a movie depicting Pearl's grisly decapitation would hurt al-Qaeda's image more than their own filming of the actual event.
...we wouldn't want to give the false impression that they were violent - would we?
This movie will not be worth watching. I am sure the terrorists will be pleased with the finished product.
Is AlQ really that concerned with what Brad and Angelina are doing?
