The New Yorks times confirms that in 2002 Saddam Hussein's "scientists were on the verge of building an atom bomb, as little as a year away:"
Among the dozens of documents in English were Iraqi reports written in the 1990s and in 2002 for United Nations inspectors in charge of making sure Iraq abandoned its unconventional arms programs after the Persian Gulf war. Experts say that at the time, Mr. Husseins scientists were on the verge of building an atom bomb, as little as a year away.
Had the United States not eliminated this threat, today we would be facing a nuclear armed Iraq and possibly a nuclear armed Iran.
The Blogs React!

Thank you.
j, didn't you break this story last year sometime?
NYT would never print this junk.
I'm still struggling to figure out why the slimes wants to put this out now.
and let's not forget all of the material taken out of Al Tuwaitha to Oak Ridge - another story that just dissappeared.
AWESOME! Spread this like wildfire. The NYT thinks it's "the October surprise" because they're so full of Bush Derangement Syndrome they think they can spin this any way they want.
Do you think this might change public opinion about "no weapons" found in Iraq?
This should be the story and we should cascade it through the blogosphere to reach millions.
It seems like they were referring to the early 1990's was when he was close to having nukes.
Hey, CP...long time no see.
This is fascinating...but, like another poster, I am curious about why they would run this NOW...
Remember, just days before the 2004 election, they ran that story about the troops not guarding the weapons areas...
I don't think the are suggesting Sadaam was a year away in 2002. I think they meant he was a year away when Iraq invaded Kuwait.
Of course the NY Times lead with U.S. Web Archive Is Said to Reveal a Nuclear Guide, and admonished the administration for putting information on a website claiming it could have helped Iran develop nukes...
This...is my spin. I took out the one jewel.
Maybe to jump start their stock price?
Hey everyone. Just have to share that my son has finally made contact with his brother today after three weeks with no word at all. He's scheduled to start his leave on the 4th (Saturday). Anxiety levels have diminished and just wanting to share the good news.
The Times is trying to spin this as "allowing these documents to be downloaded and translated by anyone on the web meant that anybody out there could learn how to build an atomic bomb, how horrible". As others have noted, that's their little last-minute attempted October surprise.
The reality is that the documents show that Iraq was a lot closer to building a nuke than the Times, the Dems, and their pals have argued. That certainly doesn't help the Dems.
Oh I don't know.. oh by the way. welcome to FR.
thanks
Outstanding. Detonate in place...
...oh, not anymore.
Never mind.
