Kingsport, Tenn. (AP) -- Early voting turnout has been heavy across the state, but the record number created a temporary problem in one county.
Electronic voting machines at one location in Kingsport were shut down for an hour Wednesday after they were unable to hold anymore ballots.

I'm wondering if alot of people down there feel that way?
If it's like the regular vote-counting machines used for us normal "on time" voters, then it is a bit older. It is a scanning machine into which the voting sheet is fed. It will read both sides of the card (approximately 8.5X11 inches) as it's fed into the machine. It's quite possible that the counters are set up to max at 10,000 to prevent any rogue outfit (like democRATs) from trying to stuff the ballot box. They may stuff a few, but not more than 10,000 per machine including legit votes. There's also a maximum number of ballots that will fit in the bin below the counting scanner head.
The ones in Knox County you have to dial in a 4-digit code before you vote. I don't know if that means that the machine can handle no more than 10000 votes in a day, but I'm guessing that it might. The code carries with it precinct information and such -- so if you live in Knoxville proper, then the city ballot proposals show up on your machine and if you live outside the city then only the county proposals show up. Also the correct US Rep, State Senator, and State Rep offices show up on your screen. So I don't know if the codes are stratified beforehand or during early voting.
Diebold is the worst offender, but none of the vendors currently certified are close to acceptable. We used Hart Intercivic here, one of the better, one race came up for recount, and it's Chinese Fire Drill time. Happens I got the rare chance to be part of two succesive recounts, Op-scan paper in '04, mix of paper on request and Hart's E-Slate. Paper, no problem, a tedious Sat. and we are done to everyone's satisfaction. The E-Slate took two weekends, a Hart tech rep, and we never could account for the number of voters to within the margin of defeat. The trailing primary candidate finally conceded rather than cost the county the expense of a new election, which he could have had for the asking.
At least here one can get a paper ballot on request and a few of us troublemakers have turned that into a minor crusade. I resigned as precinct judge after 14 years to protest poor ballot security on e-voting, made quite a stink.
I hope they're not Chavez Smartmatics machines!!!!
Did they fix the problem???
Sounds like a different machine than is used here in the Chattanooga area. We don't vote on a machine, but simply feed the completed ballot into it. We get to fill out a paper ballot by coloring in the block next to the candidate/issue we choose after which we hand the card to the official, he tears off the numbered stub and files it separately, and then has the voter feed the voting ballot into the slot on top of the machine. Looks like a giant shredder, but it's merely an optical scanner of some sort.
First, don't accuse or imply that I'm lying. Second, my conversations were all carried on while waiting in a long line at the Courthouse in Jonesboro. Can I prove these folks were conservatives, true conservatives? Of course not. Did they express outrage at Kerry's slur on the military personnel and the subsequent democrat leadership support or tacit ignoring of his outrage, revealing the true heart of democrat leadership? YES. Now, you insulting prick (little thorn), just how do you propose I prove I'm telling the truth?
Democrap party false ballots are treasonous and perpetrators should be treated as traitors since they are cancelling the voting citizen's most sacred act in this Constitutional Republic. Anyone found to be cheating the system (and anyone instructing or aiding them) should be incarcerated for the rest of their natural life and ALL citizenship rights removed. Democrat leaders, even at grassroots level, are wink and nod liars and cheats, despicable in the main.
Same ones who vote Dem because the Repubs aren't strong enough on Abortion.
Pray for W and The Election
Nope. Tennesseans are like most people in this countryfed up with illegal aliens. I don't think anybody who REALLY represents an anti-illegal immigration group could possibly vote Democratic. Harold Ford is running good campaign propaganda on this issue. He will capture some swing voters.
BTY. Early voted in Nashville earlier this week and the polling attendants said this was a record high turnout year! The Dims are turning out in numbers too, however.
On a funny note, you should hear the Seminar callers on c-span.
All those voting Democrat are speaking as if GWBush is the "other candidate."
Not one of the seminar callers spoke of their candidates.
We have to remember Democrats protest by being smelly hippies marching, protesting, and yelling in the street. Republicans VOTE.
I have.
They are retired military members and their extended families. And they are not merely angry. They are outraged.
Honestly? This campaign has been brutally negative from both sides. Those who have not made up thier minds based on other issues may take that position, but there is enough bad stuff on the ads that people have any number of reasons to choose one or the other.
So, consider the source of the interview....
Frontier lad, don't be so angry... life is wonderful.
