Seattle -- A school bus driver fired after she reportedly made an obscene gesture at President Bush has filed a union grievance in an attempt to get her job back.
The 43-year-old driver, whose name was not released, was driving middle school children back to school after a zoo visit on June 16 when the president and Republican Rep. Dave Reichert drove slowly by in a motorcade.
From the bus, the children waved; with the windows down in their car, Bush and Reichert waved back.
That's when the driver gave the president the finger, according to Reichert and Issaquah superintendent Janet Barry.
"The congressman hadn't seen it, but the president turned to him and said, 'That one's not a fan,'"
. . . District spokeswoman Sara Niegowski said the driver has filed a wrongful termination grievance through the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The union did not return calls seeking comment.
. . . "The bus driver was not terminated for making an obscene gesture at the president. The bus driver was terminated for making an obscene gesture in view of the students," Niegowski said. "That's not the role modeling we need for our students."

Sorry, Vicomte. If one of my middle school kids came home and told me about this, I would be on the phone to the local school board pronto!
And, if they didn't take action, my lawyer would be following up immediately.
The middle school kids do not need any encouragement. If they "imitated" the bus driver by flipping the bird to one of their teachers or the school principal, what do you think the consequences would be?
You do this to her, and it will be done to you.
Remember, what YOU think is offensive doesn't get to be the standard. It is whatever whoever is in command of you thinks is offensive that is the standard.
You already live in a world where you have to watch your tongue and walk on eggshells every damned day because if you offend somebody, you can be forced to pay.
You want to be part of that?
Go ahead and take this woman's job.
I say give her her job back and forget about it.
George Bush said somebody was an asshole.
Cheney said "Big Time".
These are national leaders.
It was published everywhere.
Foul mouthed men like that are an embarrassment and a bad example to our children.
Impeach them.
Cops say nasty things some time.
Fire them and prosecute them.
You must not have raised children, Vicomte, or else you must not have the same expectations of their behavior that I did, when raising my four.
Let's review:
You want to impeach Bush & Cheney because of things they said (which by the way, weren't in front of a bus-full of middle schoolers)
Yet you want to give this heroine her job back because who are we to set standards for what is offensive.
Hmm, got it. Your colors are showing. I think you're on the wrong message board.
PS: The bird is the universal hand signal for "F YOU", there can be no debate on whether or not it is offensive or intended to be so. Are you arguing that flipping someone off is a pleasant gesture?
Have a nice day.
Agreed, flipping the bird with students on the bus is grounds for immediate dismissal.
Frankly flipping the bird to someone just because you don't agree with their politics whether kids are around or not, shows you to be of such low moral character that you should not be around children as far as I'm concerned.
No fair, then she wouldn't be able to scratch and sniff.
Stop it.
Of course I don't want to impeach Bush or Cheney for saying "ass hole".
For the same reason I don't want this bus lady to lose her job.
If we want to stay free, we have to not go nuts over stupid, petty and unimportant things like this.
... is taking her hand from the wheel and not paying full attention to the road with my kid or equivalent in the vehicle.
"If she'd done it when there were no children around, I'd probably agree that she shouldn't have been fired, but it doesn't set a good example of behavior for the youth."
If she sone it with no children around the Secret Service would have busted a cap in her butt.
This finger-flipping makes the dangerous driverette a candidate for anger management in my PC book.
LOL!
She endangerd the GAYS?
Oh, well, then CLEARLY she should be boiled in oil!
Damn nice role model for the youth of today. A true liberal if there ever was one.
"You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck trying to get your bus driving job back after giving the President the finger."
we ARE free
which means an employer has the right to determine what is and isn't a fireable offense
if you use obscene gestures at work, you get fired
take the bus full of kids and the president out of the equation
let's say it's an empty bus and the driver flips off someone on the highway
I don't want my driver giving my company a bad name by acting inappropriately so it's my right to fire him
isn't it?
"You don't open fire on people for being rude."
Of course not. But you can consider them a threat, pull them over, take them in and make their life a living hell for a few hours.
Leave them in a room and go drink coffee. After a couple of hours go back in, say you saw the tape and apologize. Say "oops, we thought you were giving the President the finger, turned out you gave the we are number 1 sign."
Just give her her job back and forget about it.
why?
Go ahead and take this woman's job.
Thank you. Then we are in agreement here.
