"Police Shootout Leaves 1 Dead in College Park"
Nov 6th - 12:48pm
Kristi King, WTOP Radio
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A home invasion just blocks away from the University of Maryland campus ended in a police shootout that left one person dead early Monday morning.
Police arrived at a home on 48th Avenue off U.S. Route 1 shortly after receiving a call about the break-in around 1:30 a.m., Prince George's County Police say.
Sources now say at least four of the five people living in the home are University of Maryland students. One of the people in the home was able to escape and called police.
When police arrived - about 90 seconds after the 911 call - masked men ran out the back of the house and began shooting at police.
"We had a brief firefight," Prince George's Police Chief Melvin High tells WTOP. "The officers returned fire, striking and killing one suspect."
A second suspect was caught in a wooded area and transported to a nearby hospital with gunshot and dog bite wounds, police say. He is expected to survive surgery.
Police believe a trail of blood leading toward U.S. Route 1 suggests there may have been a third suspect. The area is cordoned off and police are investigating."
