Russian defense minister says U.S. missile defense in Europe meant to weaken Russian deterrence

The planned deployment of a U.S. missile defense system in Europe is intended to weaken Russia's capacity for deterrence, the defense minister said, according to a report Tuesday by the Interfax news agency.

"We are told that this system is allegedly intended to intercept Iranian ballistic missiles. But Iran has no missiles of this class and is unlikely to obtain them in the foreseeable future," Interfax quoted Ivanov as saying in Belarus' Soyuznoye Gosudarstvo magazine.

Washington is in negotiations with Poland and Czech Republic, former communist states that now belong to NATO, as it explores where to set up a missile defense site in Eastern Europe. The site would be the first of its kind outside U.S. territory, and American officials say it could also defend Europe against any intercontinental-range missiles developed by states such as Iran and North Korea.

"The U.S.-declared threat, which can allegedly be countered by the system under development, is only an attempt to cover up efforts to change strategic stability and to weaken Russia's deterrence potential," Ivanov said.

Report: Russian defense minister defends arms sales to Iran - November 27, 2006 - Russia's defense minister defended his country's sale of arms to Iran, saying in an interview published Monday that air defense missile systems it is delivering will not upset the regional balance of power.
Russia said on Friday that it had begun delivery of the Tor-M1 systems under a contract signed in December.
"Every country is allowed to deliver arms to another as long as it is not evading any sanctions in doing so," Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov was quoted as saying by the German weekly Der Spiegel.
