PARIS: An anti-terrorist judge put two Frenchmen under investigation Saturday for suspected links to terrorism after they were arrested in Syria on their way to Iraq, judicial officials said.
The two men traveled to Syria in October and were allegedly planning to continue to Iraq, but were arrested by Syrian authorities who suspected them of terrorist connections, according to French judicial officials.
The men were deported from Syria to France on Tuesday, and immediately detained by French intelligence agents. An anti-terrorist judge put them under investigation — a step short of formal charges — on Saturday, according to a justice official who was not authorized to give his name.
