Threat to US citizens forces MX officials to lockdown town, TX Sheriff boosts security
KVIA-TV, El Paso ^ | Nov 20, 2006

Posted on 11/20/2006 6:50:27 PM PST by WestTexasWend

EAST EL PASO COUNTY, Tx. - Residents of the Mexican border town of Guadalupe, across the Rio Grande from Fabens, are dealing with armed checkpoints and car-by-car searches.

The small farming community is under tight surveillance by officials in Mexico, and now in the United States. The scene in Guadalupe Bravo could most accurately be described as a town under lockdown.

The Mexican military increased its presence in the town, and Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West tells ABC-7 he's ready to send man power into the area on the US side of the border.

Sheriff West added that his office recently heard of plans to kidnap US citizens, and transport them across the border to be killed in Guadalupe. According to Sheriff West, Victor Canello a man with ties to Fort Hancock was taken to Guadalupe and shot.

West adds that he and his office are treating the threat seriously.

Sheriff West also says, "That's the innocent people that might get involved in this and get caught up in this is the people we are here to protect today...I've got officers as far away as Valverde County helping us with this...DPS, Game Wardens, and the Texas Rangers as well."

The increase in security is likely to continue for some time. Residents in Guadalupe also welcomed the strict military presence.

Six men were removed from an airplane at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Monday evening. Sources say the men, of Middle Eastern ethnicity, behaved in a manner that caused the crew to be concerned.

The men were taken off the plane after it returned to the gate and are being questioned by authorities. The remaining passengers were also taken off the flight, U.S. Airways flight 300, bound for Phoenix. Those passengers are being re-screened for boarding. There were 170 passengers on board the plane, which is a Boeing 757.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned that federal investigators and airport police are questioning six Middle Eastern men who had to be escorted off of a plane Monday afternoon at Minneapolis/St. Paul International.

U.S. Airway officials tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Aviation Expert Bob McNaney that Monday while Flight 300 was preparing to take off from Minneapolis to Phoenix, a passenger passed a note to a flight attendant saying they noticed 'suspicious behavior,' among the men.

The men would not get off the plane when asked, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned, and had to be removed by police.

Update excerpt:

Sources tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the men were chanting 'Allah, Allah, Allah,' as they were transported down the jetway.

Late Monday, federal investigators were still trying to determine exactly who the men are. One source tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the men said that they were in town for the weekend for a religious conference.

Hizbullah Mass Demonstrations on Thursday as Jumblat Warns of Coup
Druze leader Walid Jumblat has warned that Lebanon was on the verge of a coup d'état as Hizbullah supporters were allegedly geared up for mass street protests on Thursday.
The leading daily An Nahar said Monday that the demonstrations would most likely take place on Thursday, the day Premier Fouad Saniora's cabinet is to convene.

Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah urged his followers and pro-Syrian allies to be "psychologically" ready for mass demonstrations to topple Saniora's anti-Syrian government.

Jumblat, in turn, warned that "we are on the verge of a coup … through gradual street protests and possible collective resignations from (public) administrations and from parliament … then riots and civil disobedience."

Jumblat's remarks came shortly before Nasrallah's speech was broadcast by Hizbullah's Al-Manar television channel Sunday afternoon.

Nasrallah, who did not set a date for the demonstrations, warned that the protests should be peaceful and avoid riots.

He accused Saniora's cabinet, which is backed by the anti-Syrian parliamentary majority, of falling under the influence of U.S. President George Bush's administration, saying the government had become "illegitimate" and "unconstitutional" after the resignation of six pro-Damascus ministers, including two from Hizbullah.

Saniora on Monday dismissed Nasrallah's accusations as "untrue."

Future TV quoted sources close to Saniora as saying the premier rejected Nasralla's accusations, saying "they lead to more tension and strain."
Jumblat, however, in a speech published by Lebanese newspapers on Monday, said the ruling March 14 coalition welcomes an "honorable compromise" that would break the political impasse paralyzing Lebanon.

"March 14 Forces are ready for an honorable compromise that would not affect the international tribunal," Jumblat said at the general assembly meeting of his Progressive Socialist Party.

The ruling majority has viewed Nasrallah's campaign to overthrow Saniora as a coup aimed at devastating the international tribunal.

Jumblat said that the "compromise should start by endorsing the international court" to prosecute the suspected killers of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. The U.N. Security Council is expected to discuss the draft on Monday.

The Lebanese government last week approved the draft agreement. But it was met with opposition from the country's pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud, who said the government lacks legitimacy after the ministers resigned.

Hariri was killed with 22 others in a suicide truck bombing in February 2005. The assassination sparked huge protests against Syria, which was widely seen as culpable.

Meanwhile, parliamentary majority leader Saad Hariri retorting to Nasrallah, reiterated that Saniora's government will remain in office.

"We approve of the formation of a national unity government, but the mentality required for its creation is missing," Hairir concluded.(Naharnet-AP)

All but one of the men were released the following day, the federal prosecutor said Monday in Karlsruhe.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A spokesman for the prosecutor did not disclose the identities or nationalities of the suspects, but German news organizations, citing police officials, reported that they were from the Middle East, possibly Jordan. Kicking a CAIR Extremist Off the Human Relations Commission

On October 18, the Phoenix City Council removed an individual named Marwan Ahmad from his position on the Phoenix Human Relations Commission (PHRC). The mission of the PHRC, comprised of “volunteer citizens appointed by the Mayor and City Council,” is to “advocate and promote respect and understanding among all groups, to discourage all manner and manifestation of discriminatory practices and to monitor any such abuses and to aid in correcting such practices.” Mr. Ahmad, through his words and deeds, has demonstrated time and again that he is incapable of living up to such lofty goals, and as such, the City Council made the correct move in taking him off the PHRC.

Ahmad, a Phoenix-based publisher, produces two radical newspapers, the English language “Muslim Voice” and the Arabic language “Arab Voice.” The editorial position of both papers is unapologetically pro-Hamas, including a February 2006 editorial in the “Arab Voice” hailing Hamas’ election victory in the West Bank and Gaza.

Reno Files Challenge to Terror Law
Breitbart/AP ^ | 11-20-06 | Matt Apuzzo

Posted on 11/20/2006 9:01:46 PM PST by STARWISE

Former Attorney General Janet Reno and seven other former Justice Department officials filed court papers Monday arguing that the Bush administration is setting a dangerous precedent by trying a suspected terrorist outside the court system.

It was the first time that Reno, attorney general in the Clinton administration, has spoken out against the administration's policies on terrorism detainees, underscoring how contentious the court fight over the nation's new military commissions law has become. Former attorneys general rarely file court papers challenging administration policy.

Suspected al-Qaida sleeper agent Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri is the only detainee being held in the United States.

The former prosecutors challenged the Justice Department's right to bring al-Marri before a military commission.

A citizen of Qatar, he was arrested in 2001 while studying in the United States. He had faced criminal charges until authorities designated him an enemy combatant and ordered him held at a naval base in South Carolina.

The Justice Department said in court papers last week that a new anti- terrorism law strips detainees such as al-Marri of the right to challenge their imprisonment in court.

(snip)

Some of the eight attorneys named in the document are now in private practice and represent detainees at the military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Most served under President Clinton, though the list includes former U.S. Attorneys W. Thomas Dillard and Anton R. Valukas, who served under President Reagan.

"The existing criminal justice system is more than up to the task of prosecuting and bringing to justice those who plan or attempt terrorist acts within the United States _ without sacrificing any of the rights and protections that have been the hallmarks of the American legal system for more than 200 years," the attorneys wrote.
