Cannot see a joke there at all, so many ways it's illogical or it backfires: "If you're not a good student and.. Americans will still prefer you to lead them rather than me."

Perhaps. Some attempt at a "Bush is dumb" joke.
But Leno and Letterman don't carry the baggage of getting their butt kicked in debate with the "dumb" guy.
Imus is the bitter old kook that lives in every neighborhood, the guy who just might shoot a kid walking by. He crawled so far up Kerry's rear end that only the soles of his cowboy boots were visible. As anyone can tell, it "we need this" and "don't do this to us." I did find some amusement in Kerry being told off in a mild way.
