Just when you thought the situation in Kosovo couldn't become more complicated, Serbian voters approve a new constitution that reaffirms Serbia's sovereignty over Kosovo. What does it all mean? James Bissett, Canadian ambassador to Yugoslavia from 1990 to 1992, explains in the Canadian Globe and Mail (subscription required).
For one thing, Western powers are now impotent when it comes to granting independence to the troubled province because doing so without Serbia's approval would violate the U.N. Charter on territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders, says the author. Regardless, Martti Ahtisaari, U.N. special envoy to the region, will recommend that Kosovo is granted its independence status.
Independence "would be a mistake," says Bissett, and the reasons are numerous: Kosovo is the main hub on the continent for heroin and human trafficking into Western Europe, living standards are comparable to those of Haiti, abductions and murder of non-Albanian citizens happen on a daily basis, and civil society is practically non-existent.
To make things worse, the actions of the U.N. and NATO have been marked by "duplicity, double standards and cowardice," asserts the author. One example he gives is the U.N.'s failure to honour one of its own stipulations from 1999: reasserting Serbia's sovereignty over Kosovo.
Ultimately, granting independence to Kosovo would set a dangerous precedent, concludes Bissett, citing Russian President Vladimir Putin who has already hinted that if the West pushes for a Kosovo that is no longer formally part of Serbia, he might encourage other pro-Russian regions to go down the same route.
The recent vote in Serbia could be a "dangerous illusion" for Serbs in Kosovo, Britain's Guardian warns. It could lead them to believe that their "amputation" from Serbia can be prevented -- and may encourage them to try to force partition within Kosovo, perhaps triggering violence and a mass exodus.
Goddamn Serb Christians claiming part of their own country!
sarc. off
Oh, well, its Reuters...
Does Clinton have a 'plan' for Kosovo yet?
hey now..my dog is smarter than John Kerry!!
Hey.. Iw fished with worms on my hook smarter than him...
:)
LOL
Wrong. Enron man is enlisted as U.S. envoy for Kosovo.
What a powerful message. "a con man for a con job"
They ARE functioning on a completely different operating system -- they don't see the world in terms of individuals or even sovereign countries anymore -- they see the world in terms of ethnic and religious communities, tribes, villages ("It Takes a Village to Raise a Child"). It's more than just socialism, because it is coming from the Left and the Right. Even in the US, we are no longer individuals, we are "voting blocks" of demographics. It is Communitarianism in all but the economics -- most all of them are capitalists to some extent, but they are otherwise communitarians.
Interesting, we fought so hard for so long for the right to be accepted as "individuals", independent of race, color, religion, or sex -- and now those very politicians who we elected are driving us back into those same divisions we were sure that we had escaped for good.
basicly, communism didnt died, at the end of the cold war, US got somehow infected by it and now communism overruned USA.
USA is treating Serbia just like Stalin treated Hungary in 1956, Checz in 1968, Poles in 1980-es...
But partition of Serbia and mass exodus from Kosovo is fine?
Need we say more?
:(
Comunitarianism is a little different from communism.
Communism, although evil and wrong, was at least somewhat coherent in its philosphy -- it could be understood. Communitarianism is incoherent, but it is this incoherence that allows the globalists to take over because no sane person understands what the hell is going on. It's all slogans and "good of the society" crap -- much like Orwell's 1984.
Clinton & Kosovo, Bush & Kosovo, Bush & Iraq --same deal --none of us really understand what their motives are in any of these interventions. In both cases, Kosovo and Iraq, we were lied to -- there was no "genocide of Kosovars", there were no "WMDs" -- the American general public knows that, but we figure that "there must be some reasoning that we don't understand why we are there". It never occurs to us that something really vile may be going on -- a whole other game being played by the international elites for their own benefit -- and our detriment -- and it's being played by own presidents and State Department in our name.
But in reality, it is the elites pitting you against some other group and creating a conflict so that I can intervene & benefit from the disaster that they have created. In that sense you are right about the "Stalin & Hungary" metaphor.
Perfectly put.
Perfectly put.
Curses, drat and blast.
I don't care why we are there any more. World war three has begun. Fewer muslim extremists in the world is a good thing.
