Democratic Sen. John Kerry said on Wednesday he was sorry about a "botched joke" that drew election-year fire from President George W. Bush and other Republicans who accused him of insulting U.S. troops in Iraq.

Kerry reiterated the target of his joke was Bush, who immediately seized on the senator's remarks to rally Republican supporters ahead of Tuesday's elections, in which the party's control of Congress is at risk.

Kerry said he was returning to Washington from a trip campaigning on behalf of Democratic congressional candidates because he did not want to be "a distraction."

A day after rejecting calls to apologize for his remarks, Kerry, appearing on the "Imus in the Morning" radio show on MSNBC, declared: "I said it was a botched joke. Of course, I'm sorry about a botched joke."

Kerry sent to woodshed by fellow Rats. What a tool.........Resign if you have any sense of decency. Kerry did not want to become a distraction? No candidate would want anything to do with him now, he is radioactive for God's sake.

"he is radioactive for God's sake."

Kiss of death, he has become. My God, what a wonderful day.

This has put me in such a good mood.

Of course he apologizes for the botched joke, but not directly to those it offended. Very, very similar to Cynthia McKinney's "regret" that the shoving incident happened but no apology to the officer or anyone else for that matter.

Vomit.

Too late. This apology looks forced rather than genuine embarassment at a mistake.

Kerry had one chance to say, "Oops, that came out wrong". He blew it.

Regards, Ivan

I wish that when Kerry claims that he was referring to President Bush, that republicans would respond by pointing out that if doesn't fit with what he said. He was making the point that a lack of education would cause it. So what does that have to do with President Bush? Just why would the subject of lack of education resulting in getting stuck in Iraq apply to President Bush? Bush is actually quite highly educated, with degrees from both Yale, and Harvard. More educated, in fact, than Kerry. Kerry's pathetic attempt at spin-control would make more sense if Bush wasn't educated. Then Kerry's explanation would some sense. Since it can't then apply, then it is clear that Kerry is just lying about what he meant. Republicans are not pointing this out.

His apology was more like mine as a kid when I got busted by my parents for something and forced to apologize. As I apologized under my breath I'd really be saying I was sorry I got caught...

Does John Kerry think war is something to joke about?

So he was against an apology before he was for it?

I would just like to remind folks that President Bush got better grades than Senator "Lackluster C" Kerry.

In fact, lets make that his new nickname: When someone says "Lackluster C" you know it's about Senator "Lackluster C" Kerry. ^_^

My old man has been waiting for 35 years for his apology, I'm sure I'll wait at least that long for mine...

That is the best part of his apology. After his asinine comments at the press conference, and his childish press release, the apology today comes off as less than sincere. He is like a person caught in quciksand, the more he struggles, the deeper into it he gets. Keep talking Lurch, every word you utter helps bring another vote to the GOP.
