Every weekday at 8 a.m., Kevin Brock hefts a thick white ring binder onto a sleek, oval conference table. Labeled "Read Book," the deceptively plain folder houses the "Threat Matrix," a top-secret compendium of the most troubling reports of possible terrorist activity, drawn from the nation's 16 intelligence agencies. It is thicker than usual on a recent Monday morning, packed with 66 separate items that came in over the weekend. Brock, the principal deputy director of the National Counterterrorism Center, is about to brief some of the government's most senior officials on the latest threat information.
-snip- Facing a wall of secure video feeds, Brock watches top leaders from a dozen key players gather-the CIA, the FBI, the eavesdroppers at the National Security Agency, even the White House. A briefer from the center, running through the 18 items, discusses possible terrorist action in south Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, even inside the United States. Brock raises the recent release of a videotape showing two of the September 11 hijackers smiling for the camera. He pays particular attention to overseas threats that have a possible domestic angle. "NCTC was created to ... ensure the handshake occurs between international intelligence collection and the FBI or others within the country to take action," says Brock, a career FBI agent. "And we're seeing that take place on almost a daily basis."

Baloney. Everyone knows CTU is in L.A...
This may be fine. Doesn't say enough to really hurt and shows the different depts that we know exist are actually working with each other. That did not happen before 9/11
Interesting. I counted 6-7 CIA types etc. whose names were 'revealed' in this article!! Just one more example of the ridiculous nature of the whole Valerie Plame game!!
The boogeyman checks his closet for Jack Bauer before going to bed every night.
Jack Bauer doesn't sleep. He merely waits.
And is frequently infiltrated.
If Jack Bauer was in a room with Hitler, Stalin, and Nina Myers, and he had a gun with only two bullets...he would shoot Hitler and Stalin so as to spare them the sight of what he would do to Nina.
Uh oh, wait until Nancy Pelosi hears about this! They'll be looking for work as 'garbage engineers'.
"And is frequently infiltrated."
Bingo! My thoughts exactly while reading this whole article. The more places that the gov has that gathers this stuff, the more likely it is for moles to 'gather intelligence' at various junctions in the whole apparatus!
With your permission...I have a new tagline.
This is all well and good, but Al Sadr is still alive. We have too many brains and not enough balls.
Existence of the threat book has been widely known since the early days of the Cold War. The contents come from a variety of sources, none of which I'll mention here, and is compiled in final form by a committee. Some presidents read it carefully, eg: JFK, Bush 41 and, during the dust-up in the former Yugosolvia, Clinton. Other presidents have merely asked the briefing officer if it contained anything especially of interest that wasn't going to be in the later DOD brief-- LBJ. Nixon and Reagan gave it cursory look and--I don't have any idea what GWB does.
Not related to article: I have seen lists of these "little-known facts" relating to Jack Bauer, Chuck Norris, and (the funniest one) VP Cheney. Where did these start, and about whom was the original?
This is the scarey stuff...so when an idiot reporter asks the President how the war on Terror is going...he could probably scare the pants off of him if he wanted to....
We won't and should never know whats in that book..or told at the daily briefings.....and yes the President has..at least this one deos..has a daily briefing..
man, sounds like a bureaucratic nightmere if I ever saw one...
It is my understanding that GWB receives a Threat Matrix debriefing nearly each and every early morning since 911.
