WASHINGTON (AP) -- Thousands of weapons the United States has provided Iraqi security forces cannot be accounted for, and spare parts and repair manuals are unavailable for many others, a new report to Congress says.

The report, prepared at the request of the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Virginia Republican Sen. John Warner, also found that major challenges remain that put at risk the Defense Department's goal of strengthening Iraqi security forces by transferring all logistics operations to the defense ministry by the end of 2007.

A spokesman for Warner said the senator read the report over the weekend in preparation for a meeting Tuesday with Stuart W. Bowen Jr., the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction.

Saw The Aviator again last weekend; in it Hughes is before a Washington committee taking about $6 billion in armaments never produced yet paid for and that was 50 years ago for a shorter war.

Why is this of concern when the enemy is illiterate?

This was on CNN early this morning. They interviewed the government bean counter in charge. He didn't seem to think it was a big deal, but Soledad O'Brien kept sensationalizing it.

Yup. This here's what you call your big, greasy, slippery leak.

This item should appear above the fold in "The Washington Post" tomorrow.

Eff'em!

Remember the troops when you vote.

This is about weapons that existed, but were stolen by/sold to the insurgency.

I know, my poorly made point is when you have large expenditures you should expect some to be misplaced or not used, this is not unusual.

"just like before the 2004 election when the NYT ran the missing cache story as a headline."

My thought exactly. It worked once, so the media are going by the same play book.

Yes...it is.

I just got home, turned on Fox News and this was the story on...being reported by Jim Angle.

Martha McCallum was the host.....instead of asking ANY questions about where they were when stolen, who exactly had custody of them...etc.

The very FIRST thing out of her mouth was: "Well, this will provide more fodder against the GOP, won't it??"

Big smile on her face the whole time...and so went the interview....ALL based on how this will affect the GOP in the election.....

The headline on this article says 14,000...are missing.

But, Jane Skinner just asked the Pentagon reporter about the "several hundreds of thousands of weapons missing"....

sigh
