The federal government is to offer a sweetener to encourage the quick take-up of a new, cleaner form of diesel fuel.
From January 1 next year, the government will pay a 1c per litre subsidy on the new diesel fuel, which contains 10 parts per million of sulphur or less.
The two-year subsidy will apply until the new diesel becomes mandatory after December 31, 2008.
The new sulphur standard is 20 per cent less than the current standard.
Diesel with the new standard will be mandatory from 2009.
Treasurer Peter Costello said on Monday the cleaner standard would deliver major environmental and health gains through reduced particle emissions that cause respiratory problems.
"It will also facilitate the broader adoption of advanced vehicle emissions control technologies and lead to reduced emissions of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen," he said in statement.
Diesel excise will remain at 38.143 cents per litre.
Mr Costello said the move toward cleaner fuels had already cut the average level of sulphur in diesel from around 1,300 parts per million in 2000 to 50 parts per million mandated at the start of this year.

If you want on or off the DIESEL "KNOCK" LIST just FReepmail me........
So how does their new diesel compare to our new green diesel fuel? Which is "purest"?
American "ultra-low sulphur" diesel is <15ppm S. Their standard is slightly lower.

Pure? I dunno, but it comes in larger cans than ours.........
Thanks for the INFO!
