People with itchy feet often don't do much thinking. They become addled with the new, the exotic, the dirt-cheap maids and yardmen. I'm not much of a traveller myself.
I know of people who have moved briefly to the Carribean, only to return pewling and whining about the crime or the crude medical care or the maid who stole jewelry. D'uh. The chance to be a rich man in a poor country--the boasting like they're Cousteau or Earhardt just for buying a ticket and paying rent--tiresome.
Naivete often comes hand-in-hand with willful ignorance--like the people who won't acknowledge the danger of Islam because they happen to know a nice Muslim. They just make me tired.
That makes me want to slow roast a pork loin.

You've got me curious. I was at the Mayo 10 years ago this month. The doctors did decompressive eye surgery on me, changed my life more than anyone can imagine.
I saw a few of mideast origin, but nothing to cause me the slightest unease.

However, we stayed downtown, and there were more ME people there than Americans. We were at a long term hotel, and apparently a lot of Middle East people live there on a permanent basis.
Full burkas for the women, men with the turbans, robes, with rugs, praying facing East, the whole Muslim package.
Of course, I am American, and was wearing summer clothes. Oh, man, if looks could kill. Leering men, contemptuous women, Arabic spoken everywhere. I felt like a foreigner in my own country.
And this was right as the Israeli/Hezbollah war was breaking out. I was VERY uncomfortable.
