Virginia's tight Senate race is also one of the most vicious. On Thursday, Virginia Republican Senator George Allen came out denouncing books his opponent, James Webb, had written years ago depicting among other things a father having sexual relations with his teenage son.
The Washington Post writes that with 10 days remaining before Election Day, the allegations about sex-laced passages in Webb's writings inject a new question into a campaign that has centered almost exclusively on character issues: Should the author of a fictional work who runs for office be personally held to account for the scenes in his books?
Webb, a former U.S. Navy secretary, responded angrily Friday on Washington Post Radio, defending his novels as "serious" works and calling Allen's attack part of the senator's negative campaign that is devoid of ideas. "To take these things out and pull excerpts out and force them on people . . . is just a classic example of the way this campaign is run," Webb said. "Literature is literature. I've made my career as a novelist. George Allen doesn't have a record to run on."
Webb's books, including "Lost Soldiers," "Something to Die For" and "Fields of Fire," are historical novels that describe wartime horrors in Vietnam and people dealing with the aftermath of combat. Webb is a decorated Marine who served in Vietnam.
Allen's camp provided shocking excerpts of some books to the Drudge Report on Saturday.
Lost Soldiers: A shirtless man walked toward them along a mud pathway. His muscles were young and hard, but his face was devastated with wrinkles. His eyes were so red that they appeared to be burned by fire. A naked boy ran happily toward him from a little plot of dirt. The man grabbed his young son in his arms, turned him upside down, and put the boys penis in his mouth.
Something to Die For: "Fogarty . . . watch[ed] a naked young stripper do the splits over a banana. She stood back up, her face smiling proudly and her round breasts glistening from a spotlight in the dim bar, and left the banana on the bar, cut in four equal sections by the muscles of her vagina."
Gamblers like Allen's chances. At Sportsbook.com Allen is the -250 favorite compared to James Webb at +190 (or a $100 bet would pay out $190).
There might be some value going with Webb as some experts believe Allen's tactics will backfire.
Steven Jarding of American Chronicle writes:
"Senator (Allen), you have not earned the right to question Jim Webbs wartime experiences, from the ugliness of combat to the ugliness of what happens to civilians in nations ravaged by war. Senator, Jim Webb wrote of things he witnessed. They may have been ugly, but we should learn from their ugliness about the consequences of our votes and actions before we send men and women into war.
"Perhaps Senator, if sheltered Hollywood neighborhoods and elitist dude ranches had unspeakable death, destruction, rape, and unspeakable inhumanity to man and woman, you might now know how self serving your shock and indignation is. But, until you have witnessed firsthand the ugliness of war and the destruction it reaps upon all people, including the innocent ones, you should learn to keep quiet."

I have to agree with the "self-serving" shock and indignation angle here. I say the N-word/Watts thing sinks Webb's battleship here. The "literature" is gross, but for the candidate himself to jump in here is a bit unseemly.
More indignation designed to silence the opposition. You can't say that! Shut up. I guess that is the PC world the left lives in.
Send them a a bunch of bananas,
...or a can of miniature weiners.

No, but the voters can decide whether or not othey want to elect a scumbucket.
This entire campaign reeks. But it is good for one thing, take a look at how the media played Allen's "macaca" comment, dozens of stories questioning Allen's "racism".
How will they play the questions now raised about Webb? Want to bet they blow it all off?
hey if it is good enough for larry flynt...nothing else needs to be said!!!!!
he and clinton are what most need to make up their minds!!!
The guy wrote some pretty seedy stuff. Now he needs to account for his work; this is part of the culture war. Is what he wrote acceptable, or not?

Who else should be held to account? If he wrote the books, he is the one responsible for their content.
If Mr. Webb really were writing "serious literature," he would not be on the defensive: he would simply shrug it off. Plainly, he realizes that his writing will be offensive to many voters.
I am sorry but I would never vote for a man who could write such drivel. I guess I am not as sophisticated as some on this site, but I consider it appalling. The things that you say or write give clues to your character. Judging from the excerps I have seen, Webb is a woman hater who may be secretly gay or have gay feelings. Certainly, he hates all forms of war-even those fought to defend Americans and should not be in the Senate. Allen should shout it from the rooftops if he has to so we don't get this person in the US Senate.
