Nice post. I'm going to go fire up a Fuente Don Carlos Doble Robusto in his honor....
That's nine championships in ten seasons, including eight in a row.
Maybe Al Davis is sick and be foursome soon
Red was a player's coach. He was a leader who instilled in his players the meaning of hard work, teamwork and love of the game. When one thinks of pro basketball the name Red Auerbach always comes up. What a coach he was and who can ever forget Red and the old Boston Garden. RIP Red and thanks for the memories!
"Maybe Al Davis is sick and be foursome soon"
That's sick. Funnier than $#!+, but sick. :)
Hey I saw Al when they induct John madden at Hall of Fame he don't look good
Man that reason why Raiders sucks this season Al Davis been sick
I'll never forgive Al Davis for what he did to Marcus Allen.
And yes, he is looking like he's getting ready to tee off with Trevor, Red and Joe. :)
Thanks for the memories Coach. You will be missed!
Yeah he could hardly walk I remember that without walker he look bad SEE it not mess up asking how Al Davis doing
"Parrish.Bird,McHale and DJ...names that struck fear in the hearts of Celtics foes during the 80's."
Amen. I used to love watching them and the Lakers shoot it out back in the day. It was amazing to see the sheer talent on both teams.
RIP Coach.
You added the Jones boys -- don't forget Satch Sanders, Don Nelson, Frank Ramsey, Bill Sharman, Jungle Jim Luscotuff, Willie Naulls, Bailey Howell, Larry Siegfried. Red Auerbach was truly one of the great coaches in all of pro sports. What a great tradition he built on the shoulders of the incomparable Russell. RIP, Red.
Auerbach is easily one of the top 5 coaches in sports history. In fact, I'd even put him at #2 or #3, after John Wooden and maybe Vince Lombardi.
Drafting Bird as a junior in 1978 was a brilliant move by Red. They had a to wait a year for him to join the Celts, but I'd say it was worth the wait.
When my Dad retired at age 80, his co-workers asked what his sports fantasy would be. Dad said he'd like to interview Red Auerbach. He never expected this dream to come true. Red was gracious enough to allow the interview, and permit a local TV crew to tape it. Dad was flown to Washington, did his fantasy interview, and was able to see it televised in a 2-part feature on the local sports broadcast. He was given the tape of the full interview. Red gave Dad an hour of quality time. Whatever he did in the world of basketball, for me, this was the measure of the man.
What a wonderful story. Not being a sports fan I am unfamiliar with him.
