Facing the loss of fellow moderates in the Nov. 7 elections, Republican centrists in the House and Senate are faulting Congressional and party leaders for pursuing a strategy dominated by conservative themes...
...Democrats have also made a concerted effort against vulnerable Republican moderates, which Senator Susan Collins, another Republican of Maine, said was not much of a reward for those willing to try to work with the opposition party.
There is no one who has voted more often with the Democrats than Linc Chafee, Ms. Collins said. Yet that didnt stop them from going after him with everything they had. That is a good lesson.
Ms. Collins and Ms. Snowe noted that although voters indicate a strong desire for bipartisanship, some lawmakers most likely to be punished are the very ones who have reached across the aisle.
Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, made no apologies for focusing on Republican moderates and said Republicans should blame the party leaders for its approach...
...While Republican moderates struggle to maintain their numbers, some top Democratic challengers are from the more moderate wing of that party, raising the prospect that some gains will come from the right.
That possibility also gives Republican moderates hope that even if they number fewer, they could potentially band with Democrats in the center to influence measures.
I think, Ms. Collins said, the moderates in both parties could be empowered.

Time to get rid of the far right conservative malcontents.
The Pat Buchanan fans need to realize their guy achieved nothing.
UNFortunately, in just that scenario, all senate committees are split 50-50. We need to win 51 to avoid that.
Totally wrong. Every single incumbent republican senator has a huge cash advantage. Rino Kean is the only serious candidate that could use more money.
See #25. The minute we get a split Senate, Chafee will no longer be a Republican, and we will be the minority again.
Except for "rino" kean and "rino" Steele, we have zero chance at winning any democrat seats.
I'm quite proud of Collins and Snowe. The embarassments are the conservatives Delay, Abramoff, Ney, Foley, Duke Cunningham.
regarding post 64,
care to wager 1000 dollars on that ?
If I win, you donate 1000 to the 2008 candidate of my choice and vice versa for me. Prior to Nov. 8 we both give the money to jim rob to hold for us.
Hopefully, on a national scale, mccain, giuliani, and the rest of the gaggle of RINOs out there, will get the message, and crawl back into the primordial swamp they came from.
Yeah, you'll be proud of them when you are defenseless against a violent criminal breaking into your home to rape and murder you and your children, if gun-grabbing RINOs like them ever get the chance to help democrats destroy our 2nd Amendment rights.
Haven't YOU learned that yet Mr. President?!!
What attracts you most to them?
Their Gumby-like spines?
President Bush came to Iowa this week to campaign for Jeff Lamberti, who may unseat Boswell, but at our table we were doing an informal poll and ALL agreed that McCain was our last choice. Where do they get it that he is the front runner? How will he win a Republican primary?
The "endangered species" speaks out!
and again.... Time to get rid of the far right conservative malcontents. The Pat Buchanan fans need to realize their guy achieved nothing.
and again....I'm quite proud of Collins and Snowe. The embarassments are the conservatives Delay, Abramoff, Ney, Foley, Duke Cunningham.
Quite the argument to pose on the premiere Conservative website in the Nation! Get used to eating grass, for the pasture is your future! Blackbird.
Judging from some of the posts around here there are plenty of Republicans that would buy the blade for them.
15 "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot.
16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of my mouth.
So...does this mean that all that talk about a Republican Big Tent was all nonsense?
I don't think he McCain can win the primary. Too many conservatives cringe whenever they see him in front of a camera.
This is exactly why RINOs are so stupid. Whenever they "reach across the aisle" or do the "new tone" crap, the Dems will still stab them in the back. Better just to be conservative, where you're guaranteed conservative support.
The more moderates are endangered on the political scene, the happier I get. It's not very practical of me, but I really don't care that much if Chafee loses or not.
