Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jim Webb on Friday shrugged off criticism of sexually graphic scenes in his novels, while Democrats noted that a prominent Republican has endorsed the book.
"James Webb's new novel paints a portrait of a modern Vietnam charged with hopes for the future but haunted by the ghosts of its war-torn past," Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), says on the back cover of "Lost Soldiers," which was published in 2001. "It captures well the lingering scars of the war."
In that novel, Webb describes a man embracing his four-year old son and placing the boy's penis in his mouth.
The book also received praise from former Sen. Bob Kerrey, a Democrat from Nebraska, who wrote that the book "captured me in a well-told story that teaches us as much about how to live our lives as it does about how one man lived his."
Both McCain and Kerrey served in the Vietnam War, as did Webb. (Webb is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and was a First Lieutenant in the Marines.)
In a release on Friday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee pointed out that several prominent Republicans have included graphic sex scenes in their novels.

McCain is everywhere he shouldn't be.
Big deal!
I wouldn't vote for McCain either!
Will the dirt ever stop?
I agree with you. He's been bad for AZ and the nation as well.
This pedophilia referenced book has better legs then I first thought.
Webb is finished no matter how they try to spin it
Does the book mention how Webb knew it was the father? Didn't it happen in Bangkok a town known for it's entertainments?
If it is the father does anyone know if that is a local custom, or was that guy a sick man that was a "father" the way that an uninterested hooker is a "mother"?
webb is a footnote thats all
col Hunt was praising him as a deorated marine and Reagan official. If he was a R and now runs as a D sounds like a mercenary to me.
"of course why this particular custom caught his attention and was included in his book, except perhaps for its sensationalistic and prurient value, was not explained......."
You said it very well.
After what Allen has been put through about nothing, I don't mind discussing this.
In whose world?
John McLame doesn't get to decide for me.
The liberals are real idiots, thinking that we are going to change our tune because McLame says we should!! BWA HA HA HA HA HA!
Webb writes extreme sex scenes in novels and replies by pointing to Republican novels.
Foley sends explicit IM's to pages (but no sex), and when Republicans point to Democrats who did worse we're told that that was then, you don't point to other bad behavior to defend bad behavior, yada, yada, yada.

Did McCain even read the book, and know it contained such a depiction?
I don't know about Thailand but here in the Philippines it's apparently a local custom.
How do I know?
A couple of months ago my brother in law was over at my house and he was playing with his 1 year old boy. One thing he did was pick the boy up to head level and kiss his penis.
I was shocked to say the least and made a crude remark to him. My wife along with the sister in law heard this remark and they were shocked by what I said.
Anyway I decided not to pursue the thing with them further.
Instead I chose go to this Expat Internet Yahoo group that focuses on life in the Philippines and posed the question to the group to see if this was excepted behavior.
I got more than one reply stating that they'd seen this thing between Filipino fathers and their young sons and that this type of behavior is cultural and it's a sign of fatherly love.
For me, when and if I see it again I'll just turn my head and keep my mouth shut...
And when your friend picks up his 4 year old son and puts his sons penis in Dads mouth will that still be a cultural thing?
How about at 14?
20?
Does it ever become unacceptable for Phillipinos to put their sons johnsons in their mouths?
Just curious here. Enquiring minds want to know.
"I don't know about Thailand but here in the Philippines it's apparently a local custom."
Close enough,
The penis has a lot of symbolism and power, so I 'm not shocked to learn it is dealt with in dramatic ways by different cultures, including our own.
I don't know, I'm relatively new to this country and still learning. I have to tell you I'm still a bit in shock about the one year old boy thing...
But did they take their sons penis into their mouth? To me it is a difference without a distinction. But for this situation it probably has a bearing.
