Challenger slams Doolittle over attacks questioning troop support

The Democrat challenging Republican Rep. John Doolittle lashed out at the incumbent Friday after a series of Republican-financed attacks questioning his support for U.S. troops.

In a rare display of anger, Charlie Brown called Doolittle a coward who is "hiding behind the flag" and slammed him for failing to serve in Vietnam.

"While I was being shot at in Vietnam, John Doolittle was practicing his tennis game at (the University of California) Santa Cruz," Brown said during a news conference as he was surrounded by fellow veterans.

Brown, 56, left the Air Force in 1998 after 26 years of service. His wife, Jan, also served in the Air Force as a nurse and his son, Jeff, is an Air Force captain who will begin his fourth tour of duty in Iraq in December.

In his first bid for public office, Brown has given Doolittle, 55, his toughest challenge since Doolittle was first elected in 1990. But the Democrat faces a struggle in the 4th Congressional District, which stretches from Sacramento to the Oregon border. Republicans hold a 48 percent to 30 percent registration edge over Democrats.

Speaking at a hotel near the Capitol, Brown decried recent newspaper ads, radio and TV commercials, and campaign mailers that accuse him of harming troop morale and linking him to anti-war activists such as the women's group Code Pink.

One recent mailer from the Doolittle for Congress campaign said Brown "stands with anti-war militants like Sean Penn, Cindy Sheehan and others who want to impeach President Bush and 'cut and run' in Iraq."

"This is an outrage," Brown said Friday. "It's a lie, and it's the act of a coward."

The accusation stems from Brown's appearance in January at an "Out of Iraq" forum in Sacramento, during which Penn and Sheehan were surprise guests.

Sure, sure, climb in bed with Sean Penn and Mother Sheehan, and then cry foul when your opponent publicizes it.

I imagine the local political cartoonists are loving this.

I was just going to say that. A choice between Charlie Brown and Doolittle?
That is pretty funny.

Brown, 56, left the Air Force in 1998 after 26 years of service.

Joined in 1972 After UPT and specific Air Frame Training he wouldn't see anything close to Vietnam until 1974 at the earliest...Something dosen't jibe.

How does this line up, time-wise?

http://www.charliebrownforcongress.org/SPM/about.html

After graduating in 1972, he began a distinguished 26-year Air Force career during which he was involved in every U.S. military conflict from Vietnam to Desert Storm.

“As a rescue helicopter pilot based in Thailand at the end of the Vietnam War, Charlie participated in the evacuations of Phnom Penh, and the infamous Mayguez Incident—for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In combat, he saw the human cost of faulty equipment and bad intelligence up close. It’s a lesson he’s never forgotten.

After the war, Charlie transitioned to fixed wing aircraft and working with intelligence collection assets. He piloted reconnaissance missions in support of combat operations in Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, and Libya, and flew Cold War related missions around the world. After the first Gulf War, Charlie served two rotations in Saudi Arabia, where he coordinated surveillance flights over Iraq’s 'No Fly Zones.'

Y'know, if I had this guy's record (and it looks like a genuinely good one), I think I'd be a lot more careful about what events I appeared at--and with who.

The flight training alone would take a year and after airframe training at the earliest he would of been there for evacuation flights around 1975. It's almost Kerry-like in the vagueness department.

Wait, are you insinuating that Kerry, John F. Kerry, served in Vietnam? Say it ain't so - why didn't he bring that up before?

Well, the Mayaguez Incident was May 12-15, 1975. That's cuttin' it kind of close in timing. The DOD documents (500+ pages) are available for $10 bucks. I wonder if anyone at FR happened to acquire them. Of course, it's probably a low probablity that a jr. Helo guy would have been mentioned.

Mr, Brown could of been more diplomatic. However when I hear someone spouts off I have to wonder the veracity of the story. I have been deployed on few interesting missions before retiring in 2005. From personal experiences, I have found more liars regarding combat stories then people who actually have been there. Usually the louder they are the bigger the lie.

I can't doubt his involvement in the Mayaguez incident.

As for Intelligence, he was just a pilot, not a collector or operator. It doesn't make him an expert, just a chauffeur.

Not sure about this ~ a Dem claiming his status in the Air Force places him a position of moral judgment over anyone else?

Does not compute. Does not compute. Jim Robinson. Call your mother. Does not compute.
