Maybe I was thinking about squatters rights. I used to know a guy that had an old shack on some property that was technically railroad property. But they couldn't kick him off of it because he could trace back his family tree to that shack to the days of squatters rights. And he was grandfathered in because of that.
I also used to know a guy that had two shacks on a really small island in a river. The island was being used by the state as a midpoint for a highway bridge. His family had been on the island since before the highway existed. They made the state put an exit ramp in the middle of the bridge just for them. But they were not allowed to sell the property. Once their family dies out or moves away, the land reverts to the state highway department. That might have been part of the deal they made in exchange for the exit ramp though.

Right now the oldest thing I am working on is my family's 1924 Dodge Brothers coupe. It too has a crank handle in case the starter doesn't work.
