The point to be made, I think, is that the books Webb wrote exposes his character. I would not want to vote into office someone (and by the way uses the "n" word a lot for blacks)who is obsessed with derogatory terms for women and lustful sexual fanacies. Eventually, he would find his ideas spilling over into his real life in Washington DC because most of those people are also unreal.

I was not referring to freedom of the press or what does or doesn't belong in a library. You have completely changed the subject to make a point that has nothing to do with mine to you.

You mentioned that the things Webb had written about underage sex, bananas, et al, were not harmful to young teenagers.

As the parent of four, I strongly disagree. What he wrote was smut.

I may not want it censored, but to say it is no big deal for young people to read, as you have done, is frankly, disturbing........especially as a Catholic.

And the salient point is that this smut peddlar wants to be a U.S. Senator.

Pollster.com gives the run and averages

For all those who live and love freedom in Virginia, please volunteer for Allen. This thing is just too close to call, could go either way. Wish I could go....

Writers have leeway to write about human character.

As a man thinketh, so is he.

Surely you don't believe that Webb's depraved mind deserves a Senate seat?

Isn't it predictively ironic how the MSM portrays the following?

-- A Republican having homosexual cybersex with an adult (albeit barely...) = SCANDAL! Everyone must resign!

-- A Democrat openly writes about pedophiliac-like encounters = Story? What story. Nothing to see here. Oh, and Bush is evil.

Even if we do grant Webb creative license as an author, the entire episode speaks volumes about his judgment and leadership abilities (or lack thereof).

--Remember how pathetic it was when the Left tried to make scandals out of books written by Lynne Cheney and Scooter Libby? --

Big difference. Lynne and Scooter were not running for
ELECTIVE office. Webb gets to be judged by the PEOPLE.
Justice will be done at the ballot box.

I have lived in VA for approximately 10 years (now in Northern MD). All I can say, is close to DC, they will yawn, but the REST of VA is quite a different story. Northern Virginia has become more Liberal over the last several years (particularly the close-in counties next to DC - Arlington, Fairfax), just like the close-in counties on the Maryland side of DC (Prince Georges & Montgomery).

The quotes from the novels Webb has written that I had read on Drudge are atrocious, despicable and of no "redeeming value" (One of the US Supreme Court tests for defining pornography- can't remember what case-I think Miller vs. California). I don't care how the Dems spin it, most mainstream Americans will find it repulsive!!!

On the "Redeeming Value" test, note that what is defined as a "redeeming value" in San Francisco is quite different from what is considered a "redeeming value" in Middle America. Yep, most people would be offended by what has been written in Webb's novels. Webb's face will have to turn purple with trying to explain/justify these turgid lines and STILL he won't be able to make it fly.

It's a sad state of affairs when our own side takes shots at allen now, whose in the middle of a reelection campaign, simply to hamstring him for 2008.

As I stated in a post up-thread, my term mud isn't fully accurate. Smear campaigning by the RATS, who've honed it to an art, forces the GOP to lower to that standard for a stab at a level playing field.

I think it's a darned shame, that's all.

I am aware Allen didn't start it. My regrets are that it takes a lowering to RAT level to get a half-way level playing field for the Pubs. It's undignified to say the least and that's my lament.

Nav_Mom, I think we'd all better hang onto our hats for 2008. And buy lots of soap.

thanks for the post
