To Keep the Banlieue From Burning
Opinion Journal (WSJ) ^ | 10/26/2006 | Matthew Kaminski

A year ago this Friday, the poor, predominantly Muslim housing projects that ring France's large cities went up in flames. Just this past weekend, as if to mark the anniversary, a group of about 30 "youths" in a Paris suburb (banlieue) attacked a packed bus in broad daylight, forcing the passengers off, torching the bus itself and stoning the firefighters who arrived on the scene. In recent weeks, similar sorts of gangs have set upon police patrols in the banlieues, throwing stones and wielding metal bars. Plus ça change, indeed.

Of course the problem is not only French. Much of Western Europe faces the challenge of integrating its Muslim populations, tamping down social unrest and thwarting the threat of radical Islam. The Continent-wide reaction to the Danish cartoons caricaturing Muhammad was a demonstration of the tensions lying not far beneath the surface. Britain experienced terrorist violence with the London subway bombings a little more than a year ago and was the site of the recent thwarted plot to bring down trans-Atlantic airliners.

What nice, ready-to-assimilate bomb throwers they are!

The cheese heads would give them the keys to the city if they thought they would be spared.

If they are going to torch buses, then don't sent buses there. Do I have to think of everything?

To keep it from burning, give the police the guns they really need, then issue the order: "Shoot first, ask questions later!"

This makes an interesting -- but barely believable -- contrast to Steyn's book. Problems? First, it takes a Polyannish view, focusing on the good side of the statistics, ignoring the large impact that relatively small numbers of Islamofascists can have. Second, it's a static analysis, not accounting for the demographic explosion in favor of the Muslim persuasion.

It must be nice to believe that the French will be tough enough to turn Algerian Muslims into French secularists. Bonne chance!
