My concern is that these girls are seniors in high school and it seems as though this is their reading level?
Or, perhaps, it was their reading level when they were in 4th or 5th grade and they remember the books fondly (as some adults fondly remember Dr. Seuss) ... Perhaps they have younger brothers or sisters in elementary school ...
