School Sends Captain Underpants Girls Home (Girls Dressed Up For Superhero Day)

LONG BEACH, N.Y. -- Captain Underpants may be a superhero, but he isn't welcome at one suburban New York school.

Three 17-year-old girls were told to leave Long Beach High School when they showed up on the school's Superhero Day dressed as the subject of the bestselling children's books.

Captain Underpants is a superhero from popular books that has battled, among other things, talking toilets and the infamous Professor Poopypants.

The girls, Chelsea Horowitz, Ashley Imhof and Eliana Levin, wore beige leotards and nude stockings under white briefs and red capes. They were completely covered.

Principal Nicholas Restivo said he knows they weren't naked, but it appeared that way, so he sent them home. He didn't like the way they looked.

Other students were allowed to stay at school. They were dressed as Superman, Wonderwoman and other well-known superheroes.

One of the girls said she doesn't understand the fuss. Honor student Horowitz said of the costume, "They're not see-through or anything."

The principal said the girls could have worn gym shorts or even called someone to bring clothes to school for them. But the teens said that they felt forced to leave school. They all went home.

Horowitz said she and her friends did not want to wear "someone else's hand-me-downs" and that they had nobody else who was available to drop off clothes to school, Newsday reported.

Superhero Day was part of Long Beach High School's Senior Week. There were other thematic days during the week.

Superhero day in High School?

To take the place of Christmas.

what made them inappropriate? That the outfits were flesh colored and more than what students wear every day? Or that there were underwear on top of flesh colored outfits?

Oh my god, underwear worn on top of clothes. The school system would have been in anarchy.

It's not "school bashing" it's "lack of common sense" bashing. Apparently you lack it as well.

I don't know, but apparently Superman wasn't born with super humor.

He may have been stupid, but I like seeing stupidity in some direction other than left for a change.

It wouldn't surpirise me to hear of some principal encouraging a "birthday suit" day.

Well, duh, if they're going to have a "superhero" costume day, what else?

One of the girls said she doesn't understand the fuss. Honor student Horowitz said of the costume, "They're not see-through or anything."

Seems they cut the quote. From Breitbart.com :

"They're not see-through or anything," said one of the girls, Chelsea Horowitz, an honor student and softball player. "All the teachers thought it was cute."

At which point I would say... of course they would. kids in underwear in front of teachers is like leaving meat uncovered in the street...

but you see, this was flesh colored clothing. It's immoral, you see.

I hope they make the girl's swim and volleyball team wear burkas during meets. Someone might see ankle!

My superhero is Jesus Christ. I wonder how they would react to that costume.

For what it's worth, I think the principal overreacted. The costumes are cute and they cover nearly all of the girls body. The objection seems to be that it's "flesh colored", and that's just silly.

Those costumes aren't even close to being appropriate for a school setting.

So exactly which superhero outfit is 'appropriate' for school?
The girls participated in what the school promoted and then penalized for participating.

Not normally. But on "Super Hero Day", they are fine. They are less "disruptive" than many a Wonder Woman or Super Girl (Or the Cat Lady) costumes probably were.

As I understand, it is a book pushed by the schools because it doesn't have violence against people.

Are you kidding? That would have gotten them expelled!

Actually no sarcasm tag required. If they had brought a toy or fake M-1 to complete their Marine ensemble, they very well could have been expelled. Zero Tolerance, don't you know.

Shame on the parents for allowing their girls to go out dressed like that.

Good Lord, I've seen cheerleader uniforms that were more "disruptive" even in the mid 1960s. ... In fact most of them are/were, even at the high school level. Those are generally worn all day on the days of major events.
