I've seen him perform a number of times, always generously traveling and playing small gigs with young musicians. He's also an important record producer here in Texas and has made many contributions to Texas music.

Did Natalie's father appear in the film, and was there any indication of his political leanings?

Yes, Lloyd Maines does appear in the film. He's in a scene where they're recording the Chicks latest album. I don't remember if he said anything political.
