CBS Evening News to Showcase Michael J. Fox Interview on Thursday

Posted by Brent Baker on October 25, 2006 - 20:02.

Katie Couric touted, on Wednesday's CBS Evening News, how her Thursday broadcast will feature an interview with actor Michael J. Fox. It will air just three days after conservatives denounced as misleading and distorted his TV ads, about stem cell research, against Republican Senate candidates. In a spot for Democratic Missouri Senate candidate Claire McCaskill, for instance, Fox, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, charged in reference to the Republican incumbent: “Senator Talent even wanted to criminalize the science that gives us the chance for hope." (See my Tuesday NewsBusters posting for details.)

Couric's plug for the Fox interview followed a piece from Cynthia Bowers on the battle in Missouri with competing ads about stem cells, a story which failed to address the accuracy of the Fox ads. Couric plugged the Fox appearance as an “exclusive” interview: "By the way, tomorrow we'll have an exclusive interview with Michael J. Fox on the stem cell legislation and Rush Limbaugh." No word on when CBS might give equal time to with a different view. (A transcript of a portion Bowers' story follows)

From Missouri, Bowers, who began her story with how conservatives have countered the Fox ad with one of heir own featuring famous actors and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball player, expressed astonishment in her October 25 story about the impact of criticism of the Fox ad:

“Amazingly, [Democratic Senate candidate Claire] McCaskill credits conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh” for raising money for her “because what originally had been a limited ad campaign targeting a few Senate races in a few key states like his one, where stem cells are an issue, suddenly went national when Limbaugh suggested Fox was exaggerating the symptoms of his Parkinson's disease.”

After a clip of Limbaugh suggesting “he is moving all around and shaking, and it's purely an act,” Bowers concluded: “Limbaugh later apologized. But with the spotlight now glaring on the Missouri Senate race, the Republican party quickly channeled an extrar $2 million into the Show Me State, trying to offset an ad that may do more than pull on heartstrings. It just might pull voters into the polls.”

Not likely. On the other hand it sounds like this Couric woman would also like to inject embryonic stem cells into the brains of handicapped people and give them cancer.

RNC should IMMEDIATELY file for injunction or intervention to demand equal time. I don't know why the Liberal MSM gets away with continuously supporting DNC points without equal time requirements for the other side. The FCC should IMMEDIATLEY stop the practice, but they will of course claim "free speech" and "totalitarian Bush regime", etc., etc. This close to an election, this is a joke.

Get off your asses Republicans, and get to the voting booth. This is a serious afront to fairness in air-time.

I hope the Communist Broadcasting System does something really stupid to the point where Rush could sue them for libel big time. Would that not just be the best thing that ever happened to CBS -- other than the Rather/Mapes expose'.

Huh and CBS didn't mention this anti-cloning ad, wonder why.

Amazingly.......this is not about stem cells, but cloning.
I'll bet they don't clairfy this in the report or ask Fox about the actual purpose of this initiative.

The MSM truly cracks me up with this stuff. Fortunately, they seem to be among the few who believe their pabulum. This story is running so "well" for McCaskill that Talent's TradeSport futures have RISEN .05-.10 since this bogus controversy broke. Talent, not McCaskill, is the one who is benefitting from all this contrived hubbub.

If CBS is genuinely interested in a real story impacting the MO Senate race, they can cover the demonstrable voter registration fraud currently being perpetrated by ACORN. Didn't see that mentioned in their lead in. What a surprise. . . (sarcasm off).

I think it's completely normal for someone to have to go off their meds in order to do campaign ads for DemocRATS.

Folks, calm down -- lawsuits and injunctions do absolutely NO GOOD in these matters. All they would serve to do is keep the bogus ctory going even longer, as the reporting would then turn to GOP efforts to "suppress" or "intimidate" anyone who disagreed with their "stilted" view. Rest assured, this will die an even quicker death than the phony Foley tragedy (note: I'm not defending Foley, just pointing out that the MSM tried its darndest to make a huge mountain out of a relative mole hill).

Fox is also campaigning for Ben Cardin who voted against the embryonic stem cell bill Fox supported. It's all a lie. Fox is just using this to help liberal Democrats get elected regardless of facts. Nothing more.

Yes, you've made clear numerous times you have no respect for the sanctity of human life. Now you come out and endorse blatant and outrageous lies "I gotta admit, I agree with the dems on this one." So I guess that makes you a liar as well.

Hope? What about the embryos that are killed? No hope for them?

MJFox is being used. This fight is all about money. I understand why he can't see it even while I think his position is deplorable.

Here is a truth everyone keeps ignoring: We are all going to die. So this isn't about saving anyone. It is at best about buying time. So how much of your soul are you willing to sell for just a little more time on this earth? And remember, there is no guarantee as to how much time. You might be killed in a car wreck on your way to the hospital to get your treatments.

BTW, will Katie ask MJF, this question?

If MJF is so pro-embryoinic stem cell research, why don't he and his wife create their own embryos and then they can harvest as many stem cells as they wish.

BTW, the interview has probably alreday been taped and right now the editors at the socialist hive at CBS are probably editing it to make it as anti-GOP as possible.

Everything the media does is an affront to fairness. You really think it will be enforced? Hardly.
