I hope he is okay. Sounds a bit suspicious, almost like an inside tip-off. Then again, maybe he was just followed.

It's kind of hard to take a "war" seriously when you're dealing with a case like this. Somehow, the thought of the U.S. military having Japanese-American soldiers visiting relatives in Tokyo in 1943 is so bizarre that nobody would even consider the possibility.

The Marines dealt with a similar issue a few years ago. I believe that they court-martialled the offender because his abduction was suspicious.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I remember that guy. He wasn't abducted, he deserted. If I remember right, they got him back state-side and then he just all of a sudden disappeared (think it was Canada?).

Or this isnt his first visit to the house and was noticed before, or makes his trips so regular that he is easily picked up.

I'd think it's more like a Japanese-American soldier visiting relatives in Japan in 1946. That said, the fact that he went alone was pretty weird. Did he receive permission for his visit?

You're right this an excerpt from Jan 2005 Fox news:

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Marine charged with desertion in Iraq after mysteriously disappearing from his post has again been declared a deserter — this time for failing to report to his U.S. base.

Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun, who claimed he was abducted by anti-coalition forces in Iraq, was declared a deserter Wednesday, a day after not returning for duty at Camp Lejeune

There were NO Americans in Tokyo in 43 so it would have been real hard. On the other hand we have all the letters my great grandfather wrote home while a surgeon in the US Army - Europe 44-45. In two of them he describes visiting family of soldiers in his unit who were of German decent.

Will the same thing be happening with these West Point cadets in four or five years?:

West Point opens Islamic worship space as Muslim cadets increase
Newsday.com ^ | 10/22/06 | Newsday.com

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Muslims at the U.S. Military Academy numbered just two in 2001. This year, there are 32.

Now West Point has opened its first space dedicated to Muslims, a worship hall complete with a pulpit facing Mecca. The space officially opened Thursday.

I saw this story on CNN they were talking about similar cases and what else could be going on besides a kidnapping. They were trying so hard not to say spy I felt sorry for them. Of course, speculating on national tv at this point would be imprudent.

The "war" was won three years ago. This is a difficult reconstruction. As Constantine XI Palaeologus noted in post #10, this is more like a soldier visiting family members in Japan in 1946.

Except for the fact that we aren't at war with Iraq or Iraqi citizens. We are at war with insurgents, some of whom may be Iraqis. Bit different. BTW, one of the most decorated units in WWII was a Japanese American unit.

Not every American was born here or were their ancestors from Europe. It's what makes our country the greatest on earth.

I hope they find this brave American Soldier alive.

You don't know at all if this is similar. This Soldier was abducted from his relatives home. Whereas the Marine disappeared and was later found in Syria at his relatives home. Big difference, and the Marine was court martialed and fled to Canada.

And not really that similar since there wasn't an insurgency in Japan in '46 nor any time thereafter.
