That last sentence would get him killed with the voters. Republicans are taking a beating on this issue because both sides are framing this as religious beliefs trumping medical research. That works well for the democrats but makes the republicans look totally out of touch.
Republicans need to point out that they are only against federal funding of embryonic stem cell research - the private sector can do all the research it wants.
As more and more people are living longer lives and thus developing degenerative conditions, the stem cell issue is going to haunt republicans unless they can get out in front of it and drop the religious angle.
I disagree. If people understood the embyonic reseach is a 'risky scheme'they'd be less inclined to sacrifice human lives to further it. And once we open the debate about human life we can talk about partial birth abortion.

An act considered "sinful" in religious terms may also violate the standards of civilized society. Perjury is sin. Murder is sin. Violence in many forms is sin. The "sin" label exempts none of those actions from legal consequences.
The argument made by those who oppose destruction of embryos is not necessarily one of religion, but rather a moral determination that life is life and that destruction of human life at any stage is wrong.
Many Americans regard sanctity of human life as protected from the very beginning of our nation's legal heritage. Please do not denigrate those deeply held beliefs by writing them off as "the religious angle."
