True Story About 'Mrs. Macaca' October 19, 2006

To the Editor: We had an interesting experience at Clifton Day this year. Myself, my 11-year-old son and a friend were walking up the street in the big crowd when we encountered Mrs. George Allen and her entourage. A large proportion were skinheads. We are a very political family and we talk politics around the breakfast and dinner table on a daily basis. For some reason, Mrs. Allen introduced herself to my son, who has a sweet "howdy-doody" face with freckles. Here is the exchange: Mrs. Allen: "I am Mrs. George Allen." My son: "You suck." Me: "She's Mrs. Macaca." Mrs. Allen: "Oooooo, don't teach your children to hate." Me: "Teach your children to think. (We chant) Stop the corruption." And she was whisked away by her handlers. I get the sense, like George W., she isn't used to opposition and the usual crowd is laced, ahead of time, with only supporters. I have never been more proud of my son. We are teaching respect on a case-by-case basis, not on arbitrary parameters having to do with social position or age. The main thrust of this experience is this: We are starting to hate and it would be incredible if the children of the right wing would start to think and read for themselves. Our children will inherit this mess; it probably won't be fixed in one generation. And that's sad but politics is no longer a polite cocktail hour conversation. Maybe with Bush I we could respectfully disagree and move on, but with an administration that boasts without shame of nearly 3,000 American soldiers dead, 20,000 seriously wounded or disfigured, and an estimated 655,000 Iraqi civilians dead — that time is long past. As Americans we should be sick of lies (WMD and countless others); cheating (elections 1 and 2); stealing (Abramoff and countless others); hypocrisy; immoral morality, including pedophilia and depravity; and a war that is now projected to go beyond 2010, according to the Pentagon. Bush has polarized this country in a way that no outside entity could. It is reminiscent of the cold war threat that our country would destroy itself from within. After Bush is done with this country, and his vengeful war against the constitution, it will be a place that stands for dishonesty above all else. And the gall is limitless. Savvy viewers can pick up on the morning talking points on cable news. The newest one, which smacks of Karl Rove and his Machiavellian slant, is blaming everything on Clinton (even North Korea, which was a model of superb international statesmanship on Clinton's part.) Five years later Bush's failed lack of policy erupts. So how could any rational person consider this "safer"? Let's check in with Bush's famed "axis of evil": North Korea, now a member of the prestigious "nukes club"; Iran, getting nukes, highly controlled by Islamic radicals; and Iraq, destabilized with an escalating civil war, No. 1 tourist spot for terrorist recruitment. Afghanistan is now a haven for the Taliban and its chief export is heroin. Are we are safer purely because President Bush lives in a constant and unrelenting state of denial? (Either he doesn't know the truth or doesn't care) And majority does matter. George Allen is a Bush clone. He voted with the President in 97 percent of cases. We have the opportunity to bring back checks and balances and to take the wolf out of the hen house. Like the majority of Americans I am sick of corruption as the rule not the exception. I want investigations that aren't led by the perpetrators, I want contracts given on the basis of merit not fat-cat relationships, I want legislation that isn't bought and paid for by oil companies and pharmaceutical companies and the insurance industry, and more than anything I want the U.S. out of Iraq — like most Iraqis. This election is even more critical than the presidential election; I don't think we can wait for honesty until 2008.

Well Komrade, you're free to leave this oppresive BushRovian autocracy at any time. The sooner the better. We'll even help you pack!

................Afghanistan is now a haven for the Taliban and its chief export is heroin..............It seems the same thing could have been said when Bill Clinton was president, with one big exception, that being OBL was living out in the open as was Mullah Omar, his protector. Now Omar and OBL and hiding in caves, our troops are on the ground hunting the Taliban, and Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the masterming of 9/11 is sitting at Club GITMO, awaiting his trial. I would prefer the US get serious about the herion trade in Afghanistan, but we are in a vastly better spot now than when Slick Willy was in power.

She's just a nut. You can see it in her manner of address and her pride at the rudeness of her son. Just another sad, angry, bitter, depressed leftist who wants everyone else to share in her misery.

I'd even chip in for a one-way ticket to somewhere far away from here.

You can take this letter at face value, if you like ...

I think the writer is lying through her teeth; the incident never occurred.
