I left Beautiful Beaufort in 1963. (Marine Corps brat, I was 10)

Is that the one with the shell exploding on the deck of a ship? I remember that one.

No, it was on the island of Iwo ... a lot of dark lava soil and smoke in the air immediately in front of the jarred frame. Beaufort 1963 ... did you know any of the Great Santini's kids?

That picture was taken on the deck of ENTERPRISE at the very moment a Japanese bomb exploded. The happened during the Naval Battle of the Eastern Solomons on August 24, 1942.

This was my Dad's introduction to the Japanese:

"At dusk on the 7th of April 1945, Maryland took her third hit in ten months from enemy planes. A suicide plane loaded with a 500-pound bomb crashed the top of turret No. 3 from starboard. The explosion wiped out the 20mm mounts, causing 53 casualties. As before, however, she continued to blast enemy shore positions with devastating 16- inch fire."

He was manning a 20mm AA gun at the base of turret #3. A few feet lower, it would have hit the side of the turret, and I wouldn't be here.

Isn't Chichi Shima the Island near where the George H.W. Bush was shot down during WWII?
