Former State Senator John Ford made a noon Friday (Oct. 20) deadline to pay $4,600 in back child support or go to jail.
Ford showed up to pay the sum at the Juvenile Court Clerk's office Friday morning.
Ford was ordered jailed on contempt charges Thursday (Oct. 19) by a Juvenile Court referee for back child support he owes.
But a request from Ford's attorney, Edward Bearman, got that stayed provided Ford came up with the back child support before noon Friday.
Because he said Ford was unlikely to flee, referee Harold Horne granted the request. The finding of contempt was part of a split decision Thursday for Ford in the latest child support controversy. This case involves a woman in North Carolina.
Horne granted Ford's request to reduce his monthly child support payments to the woman by approximately $700 to $1,153 a month.
Ford has argued that his income has been down significantly even before his indictment last year on corruption charges in the Tennessee Waltz bribery sting. Ford resigned as a state legislator because of that indictment. He is awaiting trial.
As a result of separate investigations into Ford's ties to day care and health care lobbyists and companies, Ford also lost several lucrative contracts with those companies.
Joe Little, attorney for the state in the child support case heard Thursday, pushed for the contempt finding because he argued that Ford had given conflicting answers about the sources of his income.
In an earlier hearing, Little said Ford filed a petition to reduce his child support payments the same day that he signed the papers for an $80,000 car.
Ford has argued through his attorney that he has not been untruthful.
Is John Ford related to Harold Ford, Jr., Democrat candidate for U.S. Senate from Tennessee?
Whew!!!
You have no idea the corruption that's associated with Jr's family in Memphis!!!! Whew!!!!!
Oh .... yes, he's an uncle.
Yeah, I do. I have friends in Jackson.
Just wanted to make sure the same courtesy was afforded Harold Ford, Jr. (D-TN) that would be given a Republican with kin like these.
But I tought this guy walked on water already! LOL. A rat is rat after all...
No doubt Harold Ford would pay this just to keep the obvious name confusion out of the headlines just before the election. Money well spent, actually.
If there are any other Fords in Tennessee who need to get out of debt, I suggest now is the time to hit up old Harold Jr. for some cash to get out of it.
Even Uncle John's high-paid lawyers ain't going to be able to keep him out of jail for his "Last Waltz."
