People were struck by the fact Bob Seger sang "America the Beautiful" and not "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Game 1. There was no controversy, though, and Anita Baker delivered the traditional national anthem at Comerica Park last night before Game 2. Out in Las Vegas, Jose Feliciano paid close attention. "I heard Bob Seger sing 'America the Beautiful' before the first game, and I thought of Ray Charles and how great his version was," Feliciano said. "His was the best."

Anyone remember this? How bad was it?
Was only a year old in '68. They tell me the pitching was good in that Series.
Is anyone else suffering from Mellencamp Chevrolet Saturation?
pitching was good in that Series
Mickey Lolich and Bob Gibson - it was great
So Jose Feliciano is watc...I mean, following the Series. Interesting...
That was also the year Tiger Denny McClain pitched 30 wins. Last person to do it. Denny's life took a decided turn for the worse after that.
Here's the story and a link to his version at the bottom.

I remember McClain and Lolich. Who were the other Cards starters beside Badass Bob?
I'm sorry it is the National Anthem not America The Beautiful that is supposed to open the world series. Thumbs down on Bob Seeger and the Tigers management for that. I think he chose ATB instead of TSSB because it is way less demanding vocally. Let's face it: Seeger is no Whitney! He could have just played it on his little organ.
I'm gonna be honest..that Chevy commercial is not that bad. Mellancamp is a Bush hater, not doubt about it...but so are alot of other musician. The commercial is fine.
I wore my finger out yesterday flipping the channels everytime that stinking ad played.
Heck of a lot better than other 'renditions' I've heard.
Honestly now, what about that ad is so bad? They show images in history...with the end being people helping people rebuild. What is wrong with that? I really wanted to hate this ad, because I don't like Mellencamp...but it really is much ado about nothing.
Speaking of pitching in the World Series, Rogers was awesome. 8 scoreless innings, a one hitter until the 8th. Why did they pull him in the 9th. It almost cost the Tigers the win. Sometimes managers over-manage. This was one of those times.
Not sure, but I'd sure like to know what Rogers is eating this season. Soft tosser suddenly eating the black and spitting out hitters.
Great year for him, and the Tigers.
"He could have just played it on his little organ."
???????? What?
The ad is selective in the historical events it portrays, trying to draw comparisons between Vietnam/Civil Rights struggles and Hurricane Katrina. The shot of Nixon boarding the helicopter.
Propaganda at its worst. GM doesn't exactly need to alienate half the car-buying public.
Denny McClain was also a shredder on the Jazz organ.
It's our history. It happened. I think they were trying to say through the all the bad, some things are steady...THE AMERICAN SPIRIT AND THEIR STUPID TRUCK. I don't think it was particularly good timing, but I do understand what they were trying to do and I don't think it was that awful.
Hi Hildy:
I have not seen this ad at all, but from the reading I've been doing here on FR, I believe that there are actually TWO versions of the Chevy ad. I saw comments to that effect several times over the weekend. There was some speculation that the different versions are being aired on the red/blue line. Hope this helps, I think some others here would know more about it.
You're twisted.
I like that. ;-)
