MoveOn.org Urges People to Skip Work on Election Day

(CNSNews.com) - The liberal activist group, MoveOn.org is urging people to skip work on Nov. 7 and volunteer to call voters in 30 competitive districts in an effort to get more liberals to show up at the polls.

"Take the day off work," MoveOn.org said in a statement released Thursday. "Skip your annoying commute. Skip those endless meetings. This election is the best chance we've had in years to change the direction of our country. And we have a plan to put dozens of races over the top by making hundreds of thousands of get-out-the-vote phone calls on Election Day."

The group plans to call voters during the four days leading up to the midterm congressional election, with a goal of 750,000 on Nov. 7 itself.

"There are 25 Republicans whose seats will be decided by only a few hundred or thousand votes. We're calling people who are likely to lean progressive if they vote at all, but who might not vote, judging from their voter history," said MoveOn.org.

"We can decide if there's another right-wing Supreme Court justice. We can decide whether the occupation in Iraq goes on indefinitely," the group added. "And we can decide if we'll finally get the healthcare, clean energy, and corruption-free democracy we all deserve."

MoveOn.org also noted that "there's no legal concern with allowing employees to use personal leave or vacation time to volunteer as long as it's in accordance with normal company policy."

But Brian Darling, director of Senate Relations for the conservative Heritage Foundation, called the idea of asking people to take the day off work "odd."

"Conservatives tend to work and then take some time off to go vote. They wouldn't take the day off to go volunteer their efforts," Darling told Cybercast News Service. "I guess it's a different mentality between conservatives and left-wingers."

"I'm not that concerned," Darling added. "I just assume that there won't be that many individuals who will participate in it, because MoveOn.org doesn't have a very high percentage of Americans that support them.

"MoveOn.org has not had a history of winning campaigns," Darling said.

John Keeley, communications director for the Center for Immigration Studies, said the idea is similar to the "Day Without an Immigrant" illegal immigration rally earlier this year.

"The call for a boycott is reminiscent of the boycott of earlier in the spring, and that had the effect of achieving the exact opposite of what the organizers wanted," Keeley told Cybercast News Service.

"These people had a sense that these people were doing the opposite of what the rest of us are doing - showing up for work, showing up for school - that's what we do in America," he said.

"This sounds like MoveOn.org hasn't learned the lessons that most of the rest of the country did in the spring," Keeley added.

I must be missing something?!?

I've read and reread this article a few times and nowhere can I find where MoveOn is urging those moonbats who take off from work to actually go vote themselves. Just to make phone calls.

"DOH! I've been phoning all day and forgot to vote myself."

Par for the moonbats; foot, meet gun - fire.

That's probably because conservatives take their obligations seriously, and most of us have jobs that matter. I suppose it's not that big a deal when the most important thing you say at work is, "Would you like fries with that?" And you can be replaced easily.

My thoughts exactly.

And 1 minute after that they'll begin screaming, "Diebold".

I realize that these are jokes, but I kid you not: The day after the 2004 election, I was working at a client site, and this one woman as in tears because President Bush had been reelected. She was so broken up that her manager allowed her to go home. While I was there, I spoke with her for a few minutes (not knowing why she was crying at the time), and she said that with President Bush in for another 4 years, he was going to reimpose slavery! YES, SLAVERY!!! I tried telling her that wasn't going to happen because the Constitution had been amended to permanantly outlaw slavery, and besides, the people of the USA would never allow that sort of nonsense to happen. She said, no, that her husband had told her that they were going to be slaves again. Of course, her husband was a union shop steward for a power company...

I couldn't continue the conversation because it's never a good idea to argue with your clients, so I just shut up, finished up what I was doing, and got out of there.

I'm not skipping work on election day ...... I'm skipping voting on my workday... the GOP doesn't deserve to retain control.. they are no different then democrats.

the GOP has done crap.. they could hold power in the house if they would have done something about illegal immigration, tax reform, social security and curb government spending.. and what were they trying to accomplish? ban flag burning, push for outlawing gay marriage and trying to shutdown online gambling.. sorry but the GOP has lost its f'n marbles, I'm done with the party.

Democrats, work and vote - does not compute - should not be used in one sentence.

Exactly, which is why I suspect MoveOn.org is asking for a little more than just a vote. My guess is that they want as many liberals as possible, for as long as possible, at these sights with signs in hand to give the impression that the liberal base is out and voting in massive force. These people are not above using whatever intimidation can be had from a crowd full of foaming-at-the-mouth moonbats.

There is no school in West Chester Pa on election day. That will mean the teachers will be out working for the Democrats all day. They were out in force last presidential.
Many took a day off just as moveon.org suggested. They worked the polls and spoke with voters standing in line.
The Democrat State Committee is sending out slime at a pretty good rate. They intend to sink any and every GOP candidate and they do not mind how they do it. The mailings are wicked and troubling.

How about just keep liberals on the phone as long as possible.

The longer they waste their time on a conservative the less they have to call a mush minded leftist.
