Celebrities Protest Malibu Gas Facility

Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan and other celebrities gathered Sunday to protest a natural gas facility proposed for a site 14 miles off the Malibu coast.

"We have to use our voices and band together and stop this," said Oscar winner Halle Berry.

The gathering _ also attended by Cindy Crawford, Jane Seymour, Dick Van Dyke and Tea Leoni _ was intended to raise awareness about how the energy industry has invested billions to liquefy and ship natural gas across oceans.

There are five facilities proposed for California, with three along the Southern California coastline. One of the world's largest energy companies, Australian-based BHP Billiton, is seeking to build the terminal off the coast of Malibu and Oxnard. A decision is expected next year.

BHP officials say the terminals would provide a reliable source of low-polluting energy. Opponents, however, say the terminals would not meet clean air requirements and could be terrorist targets.

Brosnan, who hosted the protest, said his opposition to the terminals extends beyond the beach in his backyard. He plans to oppose other proposed terminals, including one in Long Beach and one in Port Hueneme.

Mark Massara, a lawyer and director of the Sierra Club's California Coastal Program, said the recent celebrity interest in the terminals has helped their cause tremendously.

"This is the greatest thing that has happened to our effort," he said. "We have struggled over the last three years."

Following a pancake breakfast, dozens of surfers, including actress Daryl Hannah on her pink board, paddled out to a sign bobbing in the water. The message to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has the power to veto the proposal, had a picture of the proposed terminal with a red line through it and the words: "Terminate it!"

8 mi. is the horizon over water thereabouts. BTW down here in La. we (saltwater fishers) have caught and will continue to catch off the rigs, fish, a lot of fish, good eating fish(bluefish for example are trashfish to be avoided). The oil rigs make for mo betta mo fish. The rigs that go out of production are shut down, cut up and sunk and continue to produce fish. The new deep water rigs (2k-5k ft. to bottom) don't take long (days) to attract fish. I like the lights and flares offshore of Grand Isle; who wants to look west (of Kaliforney) at flat black after dark.
Flare fishing, fun, another story.

Kennedy and wind farms--what in the hell do these tow things have in common? The possibilities could be endless.

Sure, they can afford energy at any price...

Oppose it because it "could" be a terrorist target? What isn't a potential terrorist target? Perhaps it's the celebs that need terminating [figuratively of course]

These are the same types that oppose all energy from wind-mill generators to nuclear power. Where do they think energy comes from, magically from Hollywood script?

The proponents need to start an ad campaign saying "We're building it for the children, would you deny them?"

Also, who wants to be subjected to seeing the beachfront homes of people like Babs S. block the view? Maybe those homes and occupants ought to be removed to the desert, no wait can't dump them in the desert. Send them to their bud Fidel.

They're wrong, of course. Their gas pipes lead directly to the large Hollyweird studios.

On September 23, 2004, Brosnan became a naturalized citizen of the United States but has retained his Irish citizenship. He is the father of three American sons, and has lived in the United States for more than twenty years. He currently resides in Malibu Beach, California and has a home in Hawaii. He supported John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential election, and is a vocal supporter of gun control and same-sex marriage. An outspoken environmentalist, Brosnan was named Best-dressed Environmentalist in 2004 by the Sustainable Style Foundation.

They are using that here in CT. about a proprosed terminal in Long Island Sound.

Protesting a gas facility? What, are they afraid of the competition?

6, 7, 8, thank you very much. I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

I know. They say that Bush is using fear to sway the election, but oh, by the way, we don't want that gas plant here because it might be a terrorist target.

Go figure.
