Hillary Second Debate: Adheres to Script as Rival Turns the Spotlight to Possible National Ambitions
The New York Times ^ | October 22,2006 | PATRICK HEALY

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton mixed presidential gravitas and familiar talking points in the second and final debate of her re-election race yesterday, assertively challenging Bush administration policy on Iraq, Iran, and North Korea while carefully defending her own record on abortion rights.

As in the first debate on Friday against her Republican challenger, John Spencer, a former mayor of Yonkers, Mrs. Clinton’s poise bordered on the monochromatic: She offered no new big ideas about the future of New York, she appeared engaged and mostly unflappable, and she used language that fell somewhere between safe and scripted.

Should place a BARF ALERT on NYT comments about this debate under the guise of a news story.

"Mrs. Clinton’s poise bordered on the monochromatic: She offered no new big ideas about the future of New York, she appeared engaged and mostly unflappable, and she used language that fell somewhere between safe and scripted."

And then they conclude that she is terrific. Go figure!

Did you see the second debate? I thought Hillary! was a bit more animated than during the first, but still was her typical monotone, long-winded self. Unfortunately, Spencer didn't score any knockout blow.

For those who missed it, the second debate is available online here (scroll to the middle of the page).

were the debate questions/topics known ahead of time? (I expect a yes... she would never allow off-the-cuff remarks)

people should never vote for someone that has never answered unscripted questions. if you cannot watch to see how he/she/it responds to adversity, you sure as hell don't want them in any office of importance where immediate decisions are required.

I didn't see this debate, but if it's anything like the last one, the questioners do all the work for her. Example: "Senator Clinton, there are persistent stories that you are running for President, are you?" Next question to Spencer: "Mr. Spencer, what do you think about the chances of electing a woman President?"
