WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Muslims at the U.S. Military Academy numbered just two in 2001. This year, there are 32.

Now West Point has opened its first space dedicated to Muslims, a worship hall complete with a pulpit facing Mecca. The space officially opened Thursday.

"I knew the Army had a policy of religious tolerance, but I didn't know it was to this extent," said first-year Cadet Ahmed Moomin, 20, from the Maldives.

Until now, Friday prayers were held in an increasingly crowded first-floor office, said Imam Asadullah, the academy's Muslim cleric. The number of Muslim cadets jumped by 10 from last year.

The new hall is large enough for dozens of followers, he said.

West Point's Muslim leaders approached administrators last year for help.

"We live in a world where everyone is looking at the United States saying, 'You're anti-Islam.' But here at West Point, that's not what we do," West Point Chaplain Col. John Cook said.

"Wonder how many islamites are cadets at the AF Academy?"

I currently work there. There are several. And when I graduated from the Naval Academy in 1989 there were several there too. They even had their own space in the chaplain center to worship. Somehow...we all survived.

"Imagine the sonovabitches flying fully armed B52s into buildings."

They'd have to overcome a crew of 5 to do it. Then, they'd have to survive the same gauntlet any airliner flying off course toward an American city would have to survive. There actually was a fully armed USAF aircraft "hijacked" several years ago. It was an A-10 from Davis Monthan. They eventually found its wreckage in Colorado.

the thoughts expressed on this thread do not support any argument that can be used by West Point to exclude Muslim students from either attending or practicing their faith at West Point. Simply saying it's "sick" indicates a lack of depth in thought for or against the issue.

What don't you understand?

The point that they say they will destroy us because we don't believe in their pig...?

Or the fact that you are williing to let anyone and everyone enter this country and then defend their right to practice their - it's not religion - crap....even if it conflicts directly with all this country was built on and still stands for?

I do admire your defense of the right to OUR (USA) freedoms, but you fail to realize what these people are using it for....

To take the USA away from us.

"Maybe because France has many Muslims in its military, and there is now worry now about their loyalty, given the chance they might be required to deal with the rioting by Muslim "youts" in the streets of Paris. "

I'm missing the law there that would allow West Point to exclude Muslims. France is screwed up in countless ways. Muslims in their military is only one of their problems.

Not every Muslim is a radical. Many, especially of those who live in the US, are in fact peaceful sorts, loyal to their nations. To them, their religion is just like it is to many Christians, Jews, etc - it's part of their life, part of their identity, but it is not a controlling aspect (certainly not to the point where they view their fellow Americans as "infidels").

This is certainly true of those who have the qualifications to get into West Point - do you have the foggiest idea of what the admissions/nominating process at West Point is like? If you've got a blemish, if your record is not impeccable, if you've got a link to any sort of anti-American organization, you haven't got a shot at getting in. There are plenty of people we should be worrying about - the upstanding young men and women who choose to serve, and who are selected for admission to West Point, are not among that group.

" ... provide the legal justification ... "

Therein is the rub .. we are muddled in 'legality'. I respect your position and concur we must protect our Constitution and legal system from oblique attacks .. but ... the entire sense of 'incrementalism' ... for me .. makes me wary.

Solomon had way too many strange wives ... a pretty smart guy, too ... but they LED him astray. They didn't force him .. just sorta' .. looked politically correctly pretty, gave up when he wanted ... and whispered sweet anti-God things in his ear.

Lest we forget, my brother ... precedent HAS been established, and WE, as a nation, have been blessed for our Christian stand and defense and friendship to Israel.

Islam is diametrically opposed to what we stand for ... or maybe it is ... STOOD for.?
I'm not willing to be past tense.

I don't get it. What's wrong with Muslims having a worship place if they have a decent number of West Pointers? Muslims fight for the USA too. I've met a number of patriotic Muslims. And if there are Christian and Jewish worship places, why not Muslim?

I realize that many dislike Islam. But I don't see how that is enough to yell at ALL Muslims or to say that the Muslims should have fewer rights than other religions.

BTW-If there's some big thing I'm missing (say, the West Point Muslims all signed a petition to ban Jews, etc.) then I'll apologize.

"Has the law of survival been rescinded?."

What? When I asked for deep thought I didn't figure I'd be quoted the law of the jungle. Start with our Constitution and find a law that the United States Army can use to exclude U.S. citizens who practice Islam from attending the Military Academy.

Wait a second while I get my jaw off my keyboard.

I never thought I would hear about this kind of thing happening. It just gets worse and worse with this PC stuff and giving in to the Muslims.

This is not good, not good at all and we will one day read about something horrible happening because of this even within the ranks of our military to the other service member because of this. Not to mention how they are taking over step by step.

"If the Mooselimbs here do not disavow the acts of the terrorists who are doing their best to help spread the cult of death ways, then they are a valid target of whatever may come their way."

So if they do, you are OK with them attending West Point?

There are millions of practicing Muslims in this country.

And I'm still waiting for them to stand up and say something - do something to oppose the radicals that infest them.

The outcry from the "normal" Muslims after 9/11 was just damn defeaning, now wasn't it??

Actions since - Spain - England.........

Oh yea, I can hear the outcry now........

It would be illegal for West Point to systematically turn down Muslim cadets just because of their religion.

Wasn't the guy who threw hand grenades into a tent where his superior officers were gathered, during the liberation of Kuwait, an American soldier of the Islamite persuasion?

Our troops deserve a hell of a lot better than to have to watch their backs from a enemy embedded into their ranks by the law of politically correct.

Right!! Everyday I hear their loud condemnation of the beheading and killing of our troops!!

They are real peaceful sorts. Yes - They are out on the rooftops shouting this out to make sure we hear this.

"You can see from this statement, that there is a "guilt factor" involved with accomodating them."

No more so than accomodating blacks at West Point. Muslims aren't admitted to West Point because the Army feels guilty. They are admitted because they meet the qualifications and legally cannot be excluded.

"Imagine this same approach applied to the Japanese after Pearl Harbor."

It was. Japanese fought with distinction in the US military after Pearl Harbor.
