West Point opens Islamic worship space as Muslim cadets increase

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Muslims at the U.S. Military Academy numbered just two in 2001. This year, there are 32.

Now West Point has opened its first space dedicated to Muslims, a worship hall complete with a pulpit facing Mecca. The space officially opened Thursday.

"I knew the Army had a policy of religious tolerance, but I didn't know it was to this extent," said first-year Cadet Ahmed Moomin, 20, from the Maldives.

Until now, Friday prayers were held in an increasingly crowded first-floor office, said Imam Asadullah, the academy's Muslim cleric. The number of Muslim cadets jumped by 10 from last year.

The new hall is large enough for dozens of followers, he said.

West Point's Muslim leaders approached administrators last year for help.

"We live in a world where everyone is looking at the United States saying, 'You're anti-Islam.' But here at West Point, that's not what we do," West Point Chaplain Col. John Cook said.

If there are 32 muslims in West Point, then it is highly likely that we have hundreds in our other military academies and ROTC programs.

Please don't attempt to bring perspective into this conversation. I enjoy it more as farce. But you're correct, of course. The academies commissioned only 17.9% of active component officer accessions and 6.6% of reserve component officer accessions across the DOD in FY2004. Academy grads also made up 17.7% of the AC officer corps (Population Representation 2004). Most officers are not academy graduates, and those that are received extraordinary inspection and training before commissioning. There are better ways for armchair counterintelligence analysts to spend their time than second-guessing the USMA super and his staff.

I find it interesting that you have been systematically going down the list in numerical order to make your replies (and or witty rebuttals as it were) but somehow failed to answer my post #264.

On the outside chance that you just "missed it" I will once again give my legal argument for keeping Islamics out of our military....that is what you are seeking here...is it not?

Content of the original post...

You asking for legal justification for not keeping Islamics in the US military is like putting the cart before the horse.

They should be kept out until such time that it is determined to what extent Islam is compatible with a non-Islamic government.

Europe and the UK are just now entering this debate. Apparently the US (at least the military)hasn't even considered it yet.

Any religion that has a political program involving its’ seizure of power in its’ source documents is not a religion but a political party, and if this political program includes overthrow of the existing legal civil entity as is the Koranic teaching, it can legitimately be banned under our US Constitution.

for 267 "no fighting in the streets" no, not yet... however...

In the past couple of years we've had more Jews rioting in the street than muslims. However, as riots go it was pretty lame. Someone set a cardboard box on fire, the police came and everyone more or less went home.

99.9% of Muslim-Americans aren't terrorists. Army officers take an oath to protect and defend the United States. There is no reason to believe Muslim-American officers take that oath any less seriously than anyone else.

Who makes up these statistics? "Muslim-American" is an oxymoron. Islam is a political movement predicated upon world conquest, and is therefore incapable of peaceful coexistence with or within western civilization.

So who's in charge of West Point these days... Benedict Achmed?

"Holy smokes. 248 posts into the thread someone actually states there is no legal justification."

Holy smokes Batman...read the Constitution.

The founders made common sense an intellectual art. Most of the common sense folks on this forum know dumb when they see it even if they can't come up with legal justification at the drop of a hat.

It always takes a pompous ass like Micheal Moore to tell Americans how stupid they are.

Scratch beneath the surface of said pompous ass and you find some idiot trying to make their political stance legit at the expense of intelligence rather than for it's benefit.

I just saw some in the Indian Military Academy. I also know of a few officers training with the Indian Army officers on the borders of Burma. I also know of many Indian officers who train with the Rangers. Everyone learns from each others books.

I was at the academy and the Jewish cadets who had never ever been to a synagogue suddenly became very religious...every Friday they were given leave to attend the local synagogue. Later I found out they would all go for movies and beer at the local bar.

Does anyone on this godforsaken thread realize we train the officers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, etc. I mean get a grip folks. We sell military hardware to all the countries above. We have been training Muslim cadets for decades.

"We sell military hardware to all the countries above. We have been training Muslim cadets for decades."

That fine if they take it back to Islamic countries...but the US is NOT an Islamic controlled country!

Any soldier that believes the Koran puts Islamic rule(politics) above the interests of the US...period. Those sort of politics have no place in our US military.

Sadly, the world is more complex than most people assume. You have to actually "know stuff" to form anything approaching an informed opinion.

I'm off in search of beer. Take care.

The commanders have a responsibility to provide spiritual guidance when they require the cadets to obey all their orders and place themselves in an immersed environment.

The commanders of West Point are now accountable to God Himself for their spiritual guidance to their juniors.

This means that at the Great White Throne Judgment, those commanders will have been found performing works that are good for nothingness.

Additionally, unlike faith through Christ, the same commanders now expose future generations to illegitimate leadership, void of righteousness.

Those in command positions over West Point IMHO, should be removed from command.

Listen bud (can I call you that?), I've had to train Pakistani military as a US Navy officer...I speak their language...I can understand what they say...I've heard what the Pakistani military thinks of Americans and American Values. I've hated these folks ever since...but...but...until the civilian government tells me otherwise (retired now), I have to follow orders...I must respect the rule of law. Do you want a coup in the US? Is that what you folks are recommending? We all vote for our congressmen right?

I don't think the war is a failure but I think putting Islamics into our military when some of them have declared Holy war on the US is a colossal blunder.

The political "voice" of Islam declared war on us and any Muslim that does not comply.

I don't know about you but I don't gives a rats hairy butt that the US has not been able to figure out how to call it a legal declaration of war. Do you?

Do you really believe that the entire muslim population of earth -- over a billion people -- act as a single unit?

It currently works like a world wide political Mob. The one's with the money and muscle know were to find the Islamic man's family and they have no respect for life. The Mullahs get paid off to do political favors. You can take it from there.
