WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Muslims at the U.S. Military Academy numbered just two in 2001. This year, there are 32.
Now West Point has opened its first space dedicated to Muslims, a worship hall complete with a pulpit facing Mecca. The space officially opened Thursday.
"I knew the Army had a policy of religious tolerance, but I didn't know it was to this extent," said first-year Cadet Ahmed Moomin, 20, from the Maldives.
Until now, Friday prayers were held in an increasingly crowded first-floor office, said Imam Asadullah, the academy's Muslim cleric. The number of Muslim cadets jumped by 10 from last year.
The new hall is large enough for dozens of followers, he said.
West Point's Muslim leaders approached administrators last year for help.
"We live in a world where everyone is looking at the United States saying, 'You're anti-Islam.' But here at West Point, that's not what we do," West Point Chaplain Col. John Cook said.

My thought too. Why would foreign students be going to West Point? I never would have imagined any foreigners being admitted to any of our Military schools. And at this time?
We not let Nazis or Commies in our army just like we do not allow known terrorists or members of such groups. Just as we did allow Germans, Russians, and Japanese to fight, we do allow Muslims to fight.
BTW-Why does everyone assume that all military serve against the terrorists? If a US Muslim had concerns about fighting his fellow muslims, the US would probably let him transfer.
The US military academies do exchange programs with other militaries from all over the world.
"clearly doesn't allow those colleges to discriminate in admissions because of a person's religion."
Define "religion".
See post #184.
West Point definitely has 3 churches- a Cadet Chapel for its protestant faiths, a chapel for the Catholics, and a chapel for the LDS faith, as well as possible others. It also has all of its road signs posted in English and Spanish.
" It also has all of its road signs posted in English and Spanish."
Oh, that's just precious.
*sigh* I know... I was there for a week in June for their SLS (for possible applicants) and it was quite interesting what I saw on those morning runs... not a single Mexican or Spaniard (except in the kitchen), but Spanish all over the place. Blows my mind.
What foreign military schools are our students attending?
The 442nd had no Nisei officers.
So, they participate in Friday prayers but are not permitted to leave class 5 times a day to pray to Mecca, is that right?
Husband says to tell you a LOT has changed since he was at USNA. :)
Damn shame, letting some of the best & brightest this nation has to offer pray how they would like.
Damn shame, allright.
Damn shame that people like you think the integration of Muslims is the thing to do.
It's also a damn shame that they are not more out-spoken about what THEIR religion wants to do to the rest of the free, civilized world.
You know, that whole be-heading, "we will take you over", Israel must die....thing.
You are right about the "damn shame" thing......
It's a dame shame that in this time there is still a culture that believes in 10th century values.
It's a damn shame, for sure......
Get with reality or your cult (not a religion) is gone.
Truly, just a damn shame that the barbarians are not smart enough, eh?
Just a damn shame.
You might want to inform Ms Rice about that. She doesn't seem to know.
Well, someone at Dr. Rice's department knows. See: PDF
Islam is NOT a religion any more than the KKK, Aryan nations, Al Aksa or the PLO, it is a death cult.
Did you even read the article?
"first-year Cadet Ahmed Moomin, 20, from the Maldives."
Now if we admitted "Maldives" to the U.S.A I must have missed it. LMAO
You & Moomim can complain all you like but he has no "legal right" to attend.
"Well, someone at Dr. Rice's department knows. "
She doesn't appear to. She wants to give them money and weapons.
I appreciate your contention, but unfortunately, that is not legal justification for the United States Military Academy to ignore the United States Constitution. And that is the point I've been making all along. You aren't going to get me to justify Islam. I won't. But I will defend our military and its adherence to defending the Constitution it is sworn to defend.
You are reframing the argument. The earlier dialogue had to do with whether or not it was a good idea to allow muslims into West Point - not the legality of the matter. I presume you concede that it is not a good idea to allow muslims into West Point (I missed that point on your earlier posts) -- however you now make your stand for the Constitution. Who can argue? The Constitution is obviously the finest document upon which a Republic can stand upon (excepting the Bible). So if your argument is that 'although it is dangerous to allow muslims into West Point, it would be illegal to prohibit them to do so' - I don't disagree.
Here's a few questions for though:
Were the British justified in banning the religion of Thuggery?
What if a religion was established whose central points were to destroy any nation opposed to their religion?
Specific to the United States, and our Constitution, should the First Amendment be modified to protect the United States from such a 'religion'? Or is it more important to be considered 'tolerant'?
I don't mean to link Catholics and Muslims, but the foreign allegiance think was used to describe why you couldn't trust Catholics. Not criticizing; just informing.
For num. 2, Are all muslims enemies?
