French police face 'permanent intifada'

By JAMEY KEATEN, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 15 minutes ago

On a routine call, three unwitting police officers fell into a trap. A car darted out to block their path, and dozens of hooded youths surged out of the darkness to attack them with stones, bats and tear gas before fleeing. One officer was hospitalized, and no arrests made.

The recent ambush was emblematic of what some officers say has become a near-perpetual and increasingly violent conflict between police and gangs in tough, largely immigrant French neighborhoods that were the scene of a three-week paroxysm of rioting last year.

One small police union claims officers are facing a "permanent intifada." Police injuries have risen in the year since the wave of violence.

National police reported 2,458 cases of violence against officers in the first six months of the year, on pace to top the 4,246 cases recorded for all of 2005 and the 3,842 in 2004. Firefighters and rescue workers have also been targeted — and some now receive police escorts in such areas.

On Sunday, a band of about 30 youths, some wearing masks, forced passengers out of a bus in a southern Paris suburb in broad daylight Sunday, set it on fire, then stoned firefighters who came to the rescue, police said. No one was injured. Two people were arrested, one of them a 13-year-old, according to LCI television.

More broadly, worsening violence in France testifies to Europe's growing struggle to integrate its ethnic minorities. Some mainstream European politicians — adopting positions previously confined largely to far-right fringes — are suggesting that the minorities themselves are not doing enough to adapt to European mores.

In Britain, former Foreign Minister Jack Straw, now leader of the House of Commons,

"These French citizens need to fight back. Teenagers armed with stones should not wield this kind of power over a busload of passengers. You can't always wait for police or firefighters to rescue you from an enemy in your face right now."

They've become far too "civilized" for that.

>>Seems to me that France is in the middle of a civil war.<<

Municiple Civil War yes !

That is what we had here in America in the years preceding the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865 .

Huge immigrant riots dominated New York City in the 1840's and 50's . .

Something to think about: In the Rodney King Riots of 1992, most of the looters arrested were Latino Immigrants, most of them; illegal aliens . .

>>the rioters are French-born muslim children of immigrants.<<

Not all of them, many were not born in France, but in North Africa .

Of course, 'not all', but numbers high enough that render the government paralyzed to correct the problem.

Another possibility is to allow things to get so bad, that the French populace will look on with relief when democracy has to be swept away, to allow the "strong men" to take charge "to save the country"

If most of those arrested during the Rodney King riots were latino, it doesn't mean most of the rioters were latino. We saw the riots live on TV and most of the rioters were black.

This will eventually end the way the Kent State riots ended. Someone's gonna lose their patience, and the bloodletting will begin.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was being sarcastic, and tried to add a little humor! Read the last line:

"BTW - just how many Legionnaires do you think it would take...?"

I said most of those arrested for LOOTING - - not neccesarily rioting .

Looting = Stealing

Of the 15,000 arrested for looting, 49% were illegal aliens .
Not counting the legal ones .

What the French need to do is recall a Foreign Legionnaire unit from its overseas posting and then use the police to seal the area off from reporters.

I believe the Foriegn Legion isn't allowed in France. Of course, that begs the question whether France is actually a sovereign nation anymore.

Yes You are right about that.
Also I read somewhere that now the majority of the Foreign Legionnaires aren't even foreign but French.
I haven't given completely up on the French, perhaps as the situation deteriorates further the Army will step in. And we will see another failed example of the French governing themselves when we go from 5th Republic to 6th Republic. Bring back the Capets, the Bourbons or the Bonapartes !
