Remember way back in 1898, when the media looked for any excuse--and ultimately trumpeted a boiler explosion aboard a naval vessel--to start a war so that they might sell more newspapers and profit? That quick victory against Spain led to the Philippine Insurrection, a twilight struggle against the Muslim Moro Islamic Liberation Front that cost the lives of thousands of American soldiers. We won that war, an interesting parallel to the current conflict, fifteen years later--only after we built the Panama Canal and engaged in various other military adventures. Today our military helps our Filipino counterparts to defeat Abu Sayyaf in those same jungles.
