Although the governor has expended virtually no political capital helping down-ticket Republicans, some of them are holding their own. Conservative stalwart Tom McClintock, the Simi Valley Republican senator, is neck-and-neck with Democrat John Garamendi for lieutenant governor. Garamendi is plagued by the Executive Life scandal that took place the first time he was insurance commissioner, in the early 1990s.
As the LA Times reported, Garamendi used his office to seize the California unit of First Executive Corp., a junk-bond funded company that began to implode after junk-bond prices collapsed. Garamendi then sold the company to French investors as a way to protect the policyholders. "But Garamendi had been rooked," the Times reported. "In 1998, a whistle-blower revealed that the buyers had been fronts for the French bank Credit Lyonnais, which as a foreign company was barred by law from buying Executive Life. ... [T]he real losses may not be due to his unwitting deal with an illegal buyer, but to the price he negotiated. His critics argue that he let the bonds go in a fire sale. . . .
So much for his competence. As far as Garamendi's ideology, it is hard to the left. One of his main, proclaimed goals is to use the lieutenant governor's bully pulpit to promote "universal health care" . . .
McClintock may be more conservative than most California voters, but he has earned widespread respect for his willingness to stick to the principles of limited government and low taxes. McClintock will also use the bully pulpit, but to remind us that in the 1960s California's public services were far better while the size of government was far smaller. Instead of spending money to improve the state, the Legislature has squandered it, and poor schools and overburdened infrastructure are the result.

Due in no small part to Arnold making it acceptable to vote Republican.
That's the best he and McClintock can do for the down ticket candidates ~ encourage a straight ticket vote.
BTTT
The Democratic candidate for treasurer, Bill Lockyer, has displayed a vicious partisan streak in his eight years as attorney general, using his powers to sandbag initiatives he doesn't like and to file frivolous lawsuits solely to score political points with unions and environmentalists. In his previous job, as Senate president, he was the epitome of the pay-to-play Sacramento culture, famously blocking a law meant to keep criminals out of California casinos and card clubs after taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations from the gambling industry.Incredibly enough, we have no choice but to endorse him. His Republican opponent, Board of Equalization member Claude Parrish, is simultaneously flippant, uninformed and unfocused. Lockyer may be the devil, but he's a smart devil. Were Lockyer treasurer, it is incomprehensible that Californians might someday wake up to learn that the state had lost billions of dollars because he made complex financial decisions without due diligence. That is not the case with Parrish.
We set out to give Lockyer the most grudging election endorsement in the history of the printed word. We hope we have achieved our goal.
As I said, Arnold is leading in the polls AS A REPUBLICAN.
I'm GRATEFUL, and I bet every other Republican candidate is as well.

Right on target.
I do love it when the RINO Republicans tell conservatives to put up with them betraying party principles in the interest of helping the greater cause.
But SELDOM do we ever see RINO's doing anything to help "the cause" because THEY DON'T REALLY BELIEVE IN 'THE CAUSE'.
For people like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Jeffords and Lincoln Chafee there is no passionate pursuit of ideas or ideals. No vision on how to make their state/nation great. It's more about a pursuit of power and self-aggrandizement, making calculated political decisions on how people to like them - to feed their egos.
