Baby outsourcing is a fad in Anand

Anand: Mark and Darcy Cornwall have come all the way from California because they couldn't afford not to. They've been trying to have a baby for the past five years and their last attempt ended in a miscarriage.

On their first trip to India, they have found the woman who has agreed to carry their baby - a surrogate mother. 33-years-old and with three grown children, she knows the joys of motherhood.

She also understands the pain of poverty. For her attempt to carry the Cornwalls' baby to maturity, she will be paid $5,000.

Just like her there are so many women lining up to be surrogate mothers in Anand, that some describe it as the latest trend in outsourcing.

Compared to the United States, where it can cost up to $50,000 to find a surrogate, the going rate in Anand is $5,000.

"We don't have an opportunity to have a child. And this is an opportunity right here in india. And what greater gift can you have?"says a patient, Darcy Cornwall.

As Anand becomes the epicentre for what could be a surrogate baby boom, some doctors are concerned.

"Leaving a woman carrying a child and being so far away and just coming back to take the baby when it's born, I think it brings about a whole range of ethical issues," says fertility specialist, Nalini Mahajan.

For infertile couples like Mark and Darcy Cornwall, India offers many benefits. Should their surrogate become pregnant, the Cornwalls will be recognised as their baby's genetic parents.

More importantly, unlike some states in the US, Indian surrogates have no rights over the child.

Ok, I'm stuck on this part, "they have found the woman who has agreed to carry their baby - a surrogate mother. 33-years-old and with three grown children..."

OTOH, if you change your mind about the baby you are carrying, you can abort it for ANY reason!

Renting a womb is obscene. I can't decide which is more SELFISH, renting a womb or murdering a baby in abortion. Both are SELFISH acts. One results in life and the other in death. I suppose murdering a baby for SELFISH reasons is worse.

Mark and Darcy are obviously liberals who believe that other people exist for their consumption. Who cares what happens to that poor woman just as long as she's able to bake their cookie? They don't even have the decency to be ashamed to eploit her for a tenth of what they would have to pay in the US. I hope much ill befalls them. No charitable instincts towards these two.
