Santorum -- nemesis of left -- in trouble
San francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/22/6 | Marc Sandalow

There is probably no one the left would rather see defeated this November than Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

The two-term Republican is a reliable ally of President Bush on matters from Iraq to confirming judges. He is a religious conservative who has spoken out against abortions, gay unions and contraception. He is a liaison to the business community and a consistent vote against environmental regulation. He is No. 3 in the GOP's Senate hierarchy.

By most measures, he is the most vulnerable incumbent in the Senate.

With just more than two weeks remaining before election day, Democrat Bob Casey Jr. leads Santorum in surveys by anywhere from 5 to 13 percentage points. Democrats regard Santorum's seat as the surest bet of the six GOP seats they need to win a Senate majority. And there are signs that Republicans are pulling back resources in an acknowledgement that there are other battles they are more likely to win.

The travails of a brash 48-year-old conservative who has talked about someday running for president draw unrestrained delight from liberals around the country, who hold the same contempt for Santorum that many conservatives hold for Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy or California Sen. Barbara Boxer.

"No one is further to the right in the Senate than Rick Santorum,'' said Ralph Neas, president of the liberal advocacy group People for the American Way. "If he had his way, the constitutional clock would be turned back about seven decades.''

"Gays would be thrilled and overjoyed'' at a Santorum loss,

I am praying you are right. I love Rick - wish I lived in PA so I could vote for him. He understands the dangers of islamofasicm, Little Bob Casey doesn't.

If they are supporting Casey or staying home (which is the same thing) they are trolls!

In the course of an hourlong debate in Philadelphia last week, Casey could not provide details of how he'd balance the budget or identify specific lines that North Korea or Iran would need to cross for him to vote a war resolution.

Pathetic. Is he so terrified of his own liberal voters? I guess so.

I swear, Casey always looks like he just got finished smoking a doobie. Is he incapable of fully opening his eyes?

Liberal voters in Philadelphia roll their eyes when they discuss Santorum's well-known utterings, such as his declaration that abortion is worse than slavery

I see nothing controversial about that.

Do you have a problem with Justices Roberts and Alito?

I would walk through lava to vote for Santorum.

If you think Santorum's a RINO then you're also smoking crack.

He supported Specter, to be a good Party man.

If Toomey can forgive Santorum, then surely conservative voters in PA can too.

What happened, happened. Forget about the 2004 primary and let's pray that Santorum wins.

"I would walk through lava to vote for Santorum. "

Good for you. I'm from Texas and sent a donation to Rick this weekend.

For all who can, let's ante up in the pivotal races.

I also sent $$ to Diane Irey. Her defeat of Murtha would bring as much joy to me as Dashle's defeat in 2004.

Gov. Rendell has all but endorsed Santorum

Really? I haven't read anything like that. What's the beef between Rendell and Casey?

And a "73%" from The Club For Growth:

Which is probably 73% higher than Casey will score. Also higher than 19 other Rs.

Rendell has been quoted as saying that "Santorum delivers for PA". Now, Rendell is a Dem through and through, and he won't stab Casey completely in the back. But I don't think Rendell will cry if Casey loses. They had a nasty Democratic primary battle before Rendell was elected Governor.

My point had nothing to do with whether conservatives should vote for Santorum. It was that supporting a RINO and adopting Party over principal will get a conservative nothing more than the usual GOP RINO betrayal.

""No one is further to the right in the Senate than Rick Santorum,..."

What a crock of . . . fertilizer.

Santorum is rated by the Club for Growth as the 35th most fiscal conservative.

The GOA scores him at 64% on pro gun votes.

He votes consistently 100% pro life. He also works to get pro abortion candidates elected who, when elected to the Senate, cancel out his vote.

All in all, he doesn't sound very conservative to me.

"And then there is the matter of your working to elect RADICAL LEFT Joe Hoeffel as PA Senator last time around."

Do you have proof of that claim?

No, you don't. All you have is the threat to work for Hoeffel if the race ever got close enough to defeat Specter. I was a threat that was made in anger and never acted on because the race was never close.

CG didn't work for Hoeffel and I didn't either. I voted for Clymer and helped to campaign for him. And you've been told this numerous times. Why do you repeat the lie when you have nothing more than a few emails?

"Everyone with a lick of brains thinks you're a troll..."

Perhaps if they and you had more than a 'lick of brains' you'd realize that CG is a principle conservative.

Instead of personal attacks on the poster, why don't you address the points made in the post.
