Santorum -- nemesis of left -- in trouble
San francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/22/6 | Marc Sandalow

Posted on 10/21/2006 8:43:54 PM PDT by SmithL

There is probably no one the left would rather see defeated this November than Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

The two-term Republican is a reliable ally of President Bush on matters from Iraq to confirming judges. He is a religious conservative who has spoken out against abortions, gay unions and contraception. He is a liaison to the business community and a consistent vote against environmental regulation. He is No. 3 in the GOP's Senate hierarchy.

By most measures, he is the most vulnerable incumbent in the Senate.

With just more than two weeks remaining before election day, Democrat Bob Casey Jr. leads Santorum in surveys by anywhere from 5 to 13 percentage points. Democrats regard Santorum's seat as the surest bet of the six GOP seats they need to win a Senate majority. And there are signs that Republicans are pulling back resources in an acknowledgement that there are other battles they are more likely to win.

The travails of a brash 48-year-old conservative who has talked about someday running for president draw unrestrained delight from liberals around the country, who hold the same contempt for Santorum that many conservatives hold for Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy or California Sen. Barbara Boxer.

"No one is further to the right in the Senate than Rick Santorum,'' said Ralph Neas, president of the liberal advocacy group People for the American Way. "If he had his way, the constitutional clock would be turned back about seven decades.''

"Gays would be thrilled and overjoyed'' at a Santorum loss,

Rick is in some serious trouble but his situation has improved in the last couple months. He is a hell of a fighter and has a chance of pulling it off.

He supported Specter, to be a good Party man. If the Party backs away at the edge of victory, it got him nothing.

I live in Philly and will be voting for Santorum. The infamous "Philly Dem Vote Fraud Machine" may not come out in full force for Casey, Gov. Rendell has all but endorsed Santorum. Sure, Santorum will lose the city by a large margin, but maybe not as large as expected...I think he'll pull out a squeaker. Casey just doesn't have any oomph to make the Libs vote for him in droves.

Why do politicians have to pretend to be somebody they're not in order to get elected. Frankly, I prefer politicians who have the integrity to be who they are come hell or high water, and who let the chips fall as they may. I, frankly, am nauseated by the image over substance nature of today's politics! What's the good of voting for somebody you believe in just to find they morph into somebody else after election day? Maybe the left finds that titillating, but not me.

Ralph Neas: "If he had his way, the constitutional clock would be turned back about seven decades.''

Gee, I guess I missed the amendment that installed a clock into the Constitution--the growing, living Constitution.

Whether he's right or wrong, let's face it, most people get turned off by politicians mouthing off on such inflamatory issues.

I scarcely know where to start with such a BS line as this. I mean, any idiot knows politicians are supposed to take stands on issues. Then, they are supposed to tell us what they think, so we can know whether to vote for them or not. I don't think you have any idea what you are talking about. You must think you are representative of most people. I sure don't.

There is no "constitutional clock". The document is 217 years old and doesn't change except through Amendment.

"Gays would be thrilled and overjoyed'' at a Santorum loss,

Another good reason to Vote Santorum.

There are several FR "pure conservatives" that run constant posts on why they will not vote for Santorum or almost any pubbie candidate. When you examine their multiple paragraph rants in which they constantly "prove" that Santorum is not conservative enough based on his 70% rating, his backing of sphincter or any of his conservative transgressions, one fact remains. If Santorum is defeated and casey is the senator, neither the senate nor PA will be more conservative.

They are content to bitch and moan on websites like FR, but too lazy to get involved in the political process and do some work.

If I never have to delete or skip over one more pompous post, filled with his multi-factoids of half truths, it will be fine with me. Nor will I become entangled in the mess of FR respondents, that have spent countless hours and millions of words trying to change the minds of the "pure conservatives" of that group.

You all can save your flaming replies and "reasoned" responses, I've seen them all, and these are my first and last words on the "pure conservatives" that refuse to support Santorum.

You all have made your decisions and so have I, no need to type it to death.

And a "C" rating by the Gunowners of America:

And a "73%" from The Club For Growth:

http://www.clubforgrowth.org/2006/07/the_2005_congressional_scoreca_1.php

And then there is the matter of working to elect PRO-ABORTION Arlen Specter....so that he could chair the Judiciary Committee during the term when 2-3 SCOTUS Justices would be nominated/seated....saying of him "He's with us when it counts."

"And then there is the matter of working to elect PRO-ABORTION Arlen Specter...."

And then there is the matter of your working to elect RADICAL LEFT Joe Hoeffel as PA Senator last time around.

Save it.

And Casey, Jr. would be better on any of these issues...how?

Nothing in life is perfect, and politics is less perfect than most things. Santorum isn't perfect, no one is, but to vote against him is nonsensical when you know what the alternative is. Temper tantrums are for children.
