UPD officer killed during traffic stop (Ole Miss Police Officer)
Daily Mississippian ^ | 10/23/2006 | N/A

Posted on 10/21/2006 8:06:45 PM PDT by somniferum

OXFORD, Miss.-A University of Mississippi police officer was killed early Saturday morning while conducting a traffic stop near the university campus.

Officer Robert Langley, 30, had stopped a vehicle for speeding when the driver suddenly pulled away, dragging him approximately 200 yards. Langley suffered severe head injuries and was taken by helicopter to the Medical Center in Memphis where he was pronounced dead.

Within 30 minutes of the incident, Oxford Police detained 20-year-old Daniel Cummings, a second-year UM student from Germantown, Tenn. Cummings has been charged with capital murder of police officer and is being held in the Lafayette County Detention Center.

A four-year veteran of the University Police Department, Langley had returned in April from serving with the National Guard in Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife Lisa, two sons and two stepdaughters.

"There are no words to describe the heartache we feel. This is a tragedy for so many people in so many ways, and our hearts are grieving for Officer Langley's family," said Chancellor Robert Khayat. "He served his country when it needed him and, like police officers everywhere, he was dedicated to making our communities safe. This is a tragic event for us all."

The incident is the first death in the line of duty for a University of Mississippi police officer, said UPD Chief Jeffrey VanSlyke.

"We are a small department and something like this hits everyone very hard," said VanSlyke. "Every law enforcement officer knows the potential danger every time they go to work. Robert Langley was a devoted father, a respected police officer. He was our brother."

I failed to add. Please keep in mind that I have family and friends who are on the streets today just doing their jobs to keep everyone safe. They are police officers living on modest salaries and supporting their wives/husbands and their children.

Any excuse you may give barring that the boy suffered an epileptic seizure is pathetic.

Dr. Dwight N. Ball is still in town...

That is exactly the question I was asking. He is the man in Oxford that can get you out of a pinch.

btw, ever heard of Dave Herban who got busted back in '82?

Obviously you didn't read my post correctly. I have stated from the beginning that I do not defend him. I have never implied that it was "just" a mistake.... What is making things worse are the people that are concentrating on things that have nothing to do with the matter... Where he is from, etc. has nothing to do with it and your hateful comments are useless. Obviously there is absolutely NOTHING that can be done to rectify the situation.. But as Christians we can pray for the entire Langley Family and Cummings Family instead of sitting around feeling hatred. PS - "Tragedy: an event resulting in great loss and misfortune" Was this not a great loss by all that knew Langley? Yes, it was.

How many times must I repeat that I have not ONCE implied in any shape, form, fashion that I have excused or justified his actions? I have not read any confirmed evidence that he was under sort of influence, so I do not know if it is true... If he was, then he was responsible for doing those things and THUS STILL RESPONSIBLE for taking an innocent life. I respect and support the police department, I am not sure how you twisted around what I said to think that I don't... They spend their lives trying to keep our towns, cities, country safe and I am greatly appreciate that those chose to spend their lives that way

"All of the energy you are putting into your hatred towards this person you do not even know should be put into prayers for the life that was taken and for the family that is left to go on without him. Dan was completely wrong, I know that... But just know that he has never been SCUM.. He was a good person that made a MISTAKE... the ABSOLUTE WORSE thing happened... I completely agree that he should recieve all the necessary consequences, but, as I said previously, convert your hatred into prayers that God is in control."

MISTAKE: an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.

I make mistakes every day. People don't usually die as a result. Your friend broke the law and when he was caught, he deliberately put the officer's life in danger with horrible consequences. "Mistake" just doesn't seem strong enough of a term to describe what this guy did.

And my comments are not hateful. I suspect that they don't sit well with you because you are sympathetic to your friend. Get used to the criticism. He's got a long road ahead of him if he doesn't get lucky with a deal.

This is ridiculous... Give me a better word for mistake and I will use it for goodness sake. I still wasn't justifying his actions.. I am just saying obviously it wasn't in his intention to kill him... Intention to kill or not, it was still wrong. Criticize the facts about what happened... I just want people to stop making all these assumptions about what they think they know about a person based on one circumstance (as terrible as it may be). And, I have not called him my friend once if you haven't noticed. I haven't been friends with him since I was about 5 and we went to the same high school but didn't know each other.

This officer's death is more than a tragedy. It was wholly unnecessary and brutal. My prayers are for his family.

Mine too.

And as Robert's cousin, I speak for the whole family, we do appreciate your prayers and thoughts. Keep his wife and children in your prayers, I know they need it the most.

I am just saying obviously it wasn't in his intention to kill him.

No that is not obvious.  Did his gas pedal stick ? Did he forget to let go of the officer?   This punk deserves what  he gets.

Knowing him and his family it is obvious to me that he would never INTENTIONALLY do that. I am no longer up for discussion on this website because everyone on here is a complete disappointment. My prayers are with Langley up in heaven and all of the people here that love him.

I don't have to know him (like you do) to imagine what kind of person is capable of disrespecting a police officer to the point of refusing to cooperate with his legitimate order and then endangering their life, killing them and then running away. Drunk, high or not, the guy is scum. You may not be able to see it due to your loyalties to him but it's a fact.

And please don't think that I don't know what you are thinking right now. I had a friend in high school that seemed like a really nice guy to everyone. One day, he decided to shoot (kill) his stepfather in the back and strangle his little sister (6-7yrs) with a dog leash. Obviously, he was nice to some people but he was scum. You'll get over the shock eventually and see what I mean.

Good Lord.
I saw a news reporter at the Rebel Barn on Sunday and then further up Jackson Ave filming but I didn't have any idea what it was about till today. Do you think they are saying he was drinking something he purchased there?
I was all irritated because my parking lot was closed now I feel really bad because they are having visitation there today.
