Envoy: U.S. Showed 'Stupidity' in Iraq

A senior U.S. diplomat said the United States had shown ''arrogance'' and ''stupidity'' in Iraq but was ready to talk with any group except Al-Qaida in Iraq to facilitate national reconciliation.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera television aired late Saturday, Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department offered an unusually candid assessment of America's war in Iraq.

''We tried to do our best but I think there is much room for criticism because, undoubtedly, there was arrogance and there was stupidity from the United States in Iraq,'' he said.

Regardless of what is being said on this thread, I firmly believe post-war planning was horrible at first. You would have to be fairly blind not to see that. To deny it is stupidity. Mistakes were made, the Admin is only human, and it shows. If only someone would come out and admit it instead of pretending everything went 100% correctly.

The diplomat's job is to represent the United States, not himself. Whatever his personal opinions are, he should not say we are "witnessing failure" in Iraq. It does nothing to improve the image of the US, it only reinforces a negative image. This guy really needs to lose his job. Actually, it almost sounds as if he did this as a resume booster hoping to take over Olbermann/Couric/Dean/etc.'s job.

He served in the US Army and Reserves from 1976 to 1981.

A graduate of the U.S. Army Intelligence School at Ft. Huachuca, he studied Arabic at the Defense Language Institute-Foreign Language Center from 1976 to 1977.

From 1977 to 1979, he served in the 519th Military Intelligence Batallion/18th Military Intelligence Group/18th Airborne Corps in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.

He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1981 with a B.A. in Middle East Studies. In 1983, he obtained an M.A. in Middle East Studies from the University of Arizona.

Mr. Fernandez has received several departmental awards including a Superior Honor Award in 2003 for his work in Afghanistan, Senior Foreign Service Performance Pay for 2003, 2 Sustained Superior Performance Awards, several Group Meritorious and Superior Honor Awards and USIA’s Linguist of the Year Award for 1996

So what? He could be the best brown-noser of the year and it doesn't change the fact that he should be canned immediately for what he said. If any person working for any employer in this country went out and badmouthed said employer, that employee would be canned in a heartbeat. Why should this person be treated differently?
