Entrees Reach $40, and, Sorry, the Sides Are Extra
NY Times ^ | 21 October 2006 | Jodi Kantor

A new dish is appearing on menus across the nation. Restaurateurs say they have little choice other than offer it, though it horrifies many customers.

That item is the $40 entree.

Until recently, such prices were the stuff of four-star, white-tablecloth meals, the kind that ended with a diamond ring on the petit four tray. But now entrees over $40 can be found in restaurants that are merely upscale, where diners wear jeans and tote children. In geographic terms, New York and Las Vegas have led the charge, and in culinary ones, luxury items like steak and lobster were first and are still most prevalent.

But the $40 entree is migrating: to restaurants in Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale and Denver, and to ingredients like fish and even pasta. Several national chains serve entrees priced above $40...

Using the accountant's rule of 72 if inflation is 3%, prices double every 24 years. If the inflation rate is 6% they double every 12 years.

Prices are not going up, the value of money is going down.

Sorry if I don't care, but rarely would I ever pay $40 for a meal, much less an entree.

You are absolutely correct.

The root of the issue is inflation.

The dollar has been losing value rapidly over the last several years. That better explains the rising cost of hard assets, oil, gold, building materials, etc.

I don't think I've ever paid that much for an entree, nor do I envision that I would ever. My cooking tastes better than most restaurants at which I've dined.

If you're gonna pay over 40 bucks for an entree at a chain restaurant, then you deserve to pay 40 bucks for an entree at a chain restaurant.

Sometimes a meal is worth what you pay for it. At other times, it isn't. Go figure.

A coney dog with everything is still $2.50 at the restaurant I go to. Fries are extra.

I do a few times a year because of some major gig with the military, but to actually go to a resturant and order a 40 dollar meal would not be normal to me.

That's what is so great about America. We have choices, lots of choices.

People spend their hard earned money any way they wish.

We like the diner for breakfasts and lunches, and for special occasions we splurge!

But, for only $37.00 more you could have this:

Take that burger and add tarragon-infused mayonnaise, fresh organic baby spinach leaves and a honey wheat bun, and you could probably get $40 out of it.

Ah, at the Old Homestead you can still buy that $100 hamburger! (not that there's anything wrong with that)

I think the only time I've ever blown more than $40 on a meal, it was the total, with tip, for me and my date. I think it came out to around $50.
