I concur with others that Jesus would never vote. He's not coming back to establish a democracy or a republic.
I'm pretty sure you're right....no brain sucking.
It's hard to believe that even democrats would support that....unbelievable.
I don't think you're getting into the spirit of the article, DK.
Imagine if......
Pick the Apostle John, then. How would he vote?
Him: Carr feared that too many Christians too narrowly focus on a limited set of issues, namely same-sex marriage and abortion. = Let's not argue and bicker about whooo killed whooo
He wouldn't vote either... :-)
He owes his allegience to one country, the heavenly country.
With all the corruption in politics on both sides of the aisle, I honestly can't see why they would endorse it by participating in it.
While I'm sure you are correct, I can't buy into that as a Christian approach. Voting to take your neighbor's property to give away to someone else is simply coveting. While it may be coveting your neighbor's property with the best of intentions, my Bible doesn't give me that choice. Nope, a Christian can't outsource to the Government their duty to be charitable and generous. It is a duty Jesus commands us to do individually - and a Christian who fails to do this is just as wrong as the Christian who forces someone else to do it.
Interesting discussion. Sort of like if Jesus has first come last Century and was now a 33 year old voting citizen
I agree 100%, well said.
So JEsus would be against social security? or a Safety net?
No, Jesus specifically calls each one of us to voluntarily provide just such a net. No where does he ever say, however, that we should collectively use force to redistribute resources for the common good. So for myself, I'll go with what Jesus actually does call me to do (which includes obeying the law whether I like it or not) and trust him to take care of the rest.
No, Jesus would tell you to do that, which is no more of a choice than doing it at the point of a gun. Jesus was the opposite of libertarian.
Jesus never spoke about what governments should do. He always only spoke about how individuals should lead their own personal lives. Liberal branches of Christianity fail to see that fact, and insist on imposing Christ's teaching (for instance on living in peace with one's fellow man ) upon government institutions. This is where such liberal positions on anti-war and anti-capital-punishment. and government social programs derives from. But while Christ taught that we are to lead personal lives loving our fellow man, he never said governments could not execute heinous criminals or not go to war or that governments should be responsible for the social welfare of poor people. He said that we, as brothers of our fellow man, are responsible, as individuals for our fellow man. Its a big difference.
"Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and who write oppressive decrees, depriving the needy of judgment and robbing my people's poor of their rights, making widows their plunder, and orphans their prey! What will you do on the day of punishment, when ruin comes from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth, lest it sink beneath the captive or fall beneath the slain? For all this, his wrath is not turned back, his hand is still outstretched. Hearken, you who are in power over the multitude and lord it over throngs of peoples! Because authority was given you by the Lord and sovereignty by the Most High, He will probe your works and scrutinize your counsels. Judgment is stern for the exalted! The lowly may be pardoned out of mercy"
Isaiah
Chapter 10
I don't know about you but that sounds like God has a few words about what Govt shouldnt do. Since we elect the rulers that enact statutes I think we are included in this
So Jesus would be fine with Taxes as long as it goes to support a military, public schools or such things as NPR but Social security and Welfare would be stealing?
Terrorists reply, "Dead Christians don't vote."
That's exactly what Jesus DID say. When he said to "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" he knew those taxes going to Caesar were going for a military and the Roman treasury and that none were going for welfare or social security. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus says we have a duty to God to be charitable to our fellow man and this is what he's refering to when he finished the above sentence by saying, "and render unto God what is God's."
Jesus is a monarchist. However, if He lived today in the U.S., He would not vote for any party or candidate that supports confiscatory taxation, which is just armed robbery by another name.
He'd certainly use the criteria of faith, honesty, wisdom and truth; most of all truth. In other words He wouldn't vote, because there are no politicians out there who possess these qualities. Politics is a corrupt game whose actors are far more concerned with 'perception' than with reality and truth. They will all deceive, to one degree or another, to obtain or retain power.
